Suspected of corruption Włodzimierz Karpiński – suspended from the position of secretary of the capital Warsaw, former president of the municipal company MPO and former finance minister, remains in custody. The court in Katowice on Wednesday did not accept the complaint against the use of such a preventive measure against him. According to information from Włodzimierz Karpiński’s lawyer, he intends to resign from his position, Monika Beuth, spokeswoman for the capital’s city hall, told PAP.
Former finance minister remains in custody
Karpiński is suspected of taking bribes of almost PLN 5 million in connection with the selection procedure of companies participating in the waste collection process in Warsaw. At the end of February, the Katowice-Wschód District Court granted the request of the National Prosecutor’s Office and arrested him for 90 days.
The detectives account for the fact that in this case there were not only fears of conspiracy, but that even – in their opinion – the suspect had already taken actions that bore the characteristics of conspiracy. When submitting the request for arrest, the public prosecutor’s office also pointed to the high probability of committing the alleged crime and the threat of severe punishment.
Karpinski pleaded not guilty. According to the suspect’s lawyer, Michał Królikowski, who filed a complaint against the arrest, his client faces “the defamation of co-defendants”. After Karpiński was arrested by the district court, Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski decided to suspend him from the duties of the city’s secretary.
Karpiński, who agreed to give his name in full, was accused of accepting a cash payment of almost PLN 5 million before being arrested in the Silesian branch of the national prosecutor’s office. At the beginning of February, a similar claim in the same investigation has already been heard by the former deputy finance minister Rafał Baniak (he also agrees to give his name – PAP). In the entire investigation there are 14 suspects, who are accused of, among other things, participating in and leading an organized criminal group.
Karpiński intends to resign
According to information from Włodzimierz Karpiński’s lawyer, he intends to resign from his position, Monika Beuth, spokeswoman for the capital’s city hall, told PAP.
The spokesman pointed out that it would be accepted in this situation and that Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski would immediately announce a competition for the post of secretary of the capital Warsaw. from Warsaw.
