Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an interview with Kossuth radio station that the moment is approaching when Western countries can offer to send troops to Ukraine.
“I think we are very close to a serious proposal to send troops from Ukraine and allied countries across the border to Ukrainian territory.”
The prime minister thinks.
According to him, the leaders of Western countries were seized by a “war fever”, so Ukraine is increasingly receiving weapons, including previously rejected. “The Germans started with helmets and now they’re sending tanks, even though it was previously declared an absolute taboo,” he said.
Orban stressed that the world has “never been closer to the escalation of a local war to a global war”.
On February 27, Orban expressed his fears in a speech to parliament. According to him, in Budapest they monitor the supply of weapons to Kiev and are afraid that the EU will announce that it will send military personnel to Ukraine from one of the Union countries.
“The Hungarian government is watching with serious concern as Europe enters the war. “If this continues, there will be those who send soldiers,” he said.
Orban reminded that the Hungarians decided to stay away from the conflict last year. The Hungarian government sympathizes with and helps Ukraine, but stressed that Kiev’s interests cannot stand above Budapest’s.
“More and faster supply”
On March 8, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that they generally agreed with the proposal of the heads of the defense departments of the EU countries to order military aid to Ukraine. He also reiterated his previous call to speed up ammunition shipments to Ukraine, lower their prices and increase the volume of deliveries. According to him, it is necessary to “deliver more, but also faster”.
The head of EU diplomacy said he briefed defense ministers on his proposed “three aspects” for ammunition support that should be carried out simultaneously to Ukraine. It was proposed to organize urgent deliveries of ammunition from the existing stocks of the EU to Kiev – both NATO calibers and calibers of the armies of the former Warsaw Pact countries – it was proposed to allocate € 1 billion from European Peace Funds for this. It is also proposed to consolidate orders for new ammunition from member states – according to Borrell, this will lower the prices of the products of the military-industrial complex and shorten the delivery times. Finally, he said that the capacity of the military-industrial complex of EU countries should be increased in order to meet both domestic demand and Ukraine’s needs.
Western promises
On March 4, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance does not plan to supply aircraft and send its army to Ukraine, as this threatens to turn the conflict into a full-scale war.
“We agree that neither NATO aircraft nor NATO ground forces should be there. <...> We understand desperation, but we also believe that if [установим бесполетную зону]then we get something that could lead to an all-out war in Europe,” he said.
In December 2022, Stoltenberg stated that NATO is now “stronger than ever”.
On January 25, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz denied the direct participation of NATO troops in hostilities in Ukraine and the establishment of a no-fly zone over the country.
“We will not send ground troops under any circumstances. There will be no direct participation of NATO troops in the war in Ukraine. “This has not happened before and it will not happen in the future.”
On December 21, 2022, a senior White House official reminded that US President Joe Biden would not send US troops to Ukraine.
“HE [Джо Байден] He did not and will not hesitate tomorrow, in a month or in a year, that the United States will not send troops to Ukraine to fight the Russians directly,” he said.
Biden stated this himself on November 10.
“We have often been asked whether we would prefer to supply American aircraft to ensure the security of Ukrainian airspace. I said, “No, we’re not going to do that. We will not enter the third world war by hijacking Russian planes and directly involved in the conflict.” But are we going to provide Ukraine to everyone so that they have the opportunity to defend themselves? Yes,” said Biden.
