German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer welcomed the Georgian authorities’ decision to withdraw controversial bills on “transparency of foreign influence” and “registration of foreign agents” that sparked mass protests. “We welcome the withdrawal of the bill. The EU and Georgia are facing a great historic opportunity: Georgia’s candidate status I support that,” Fischer tweeted.
As the German ambassador pointed out, in order to obtain candidate status for EU membership, Georgia will have to implement the 12 recommendations of Brussels. He added that he thinks this is quite achievable if all the political forces of the republic want and focus on it within the framework of a democratic, peaceful and inclusive process.
