There is an opportunity for the EU to withdraw from plans to ban the registration of vehicles that emit exhaust gases from 2035. Studio.
Last Friday, EU ambassadors canceled a March 7 vote on a law that would end sales of new combustion engine cars by 2035. The European Union postpones the vote after Germany withdrew its previous support for the legislation.
Szynkowski vel Sęk was asked in the PAP Studio if he thought there was a chance for the EU to withdraw from the planned and adopted by the European Parliament ban on the registration of vehicles that emit exhaust fumes from 2035.
I think so
he answered.
Polish opposition
The EU minister stressed that Poland had never agreed to such a “revolutionary” way of refraining from registering internal combustion engine cars, but as he noted, Poland was outnumbered in its opposition. He added that during last week’s visit to Berlin, he noticed a change in the approach of German politicians, to whom the discussion on this topic seemed closed until now.
There is currently a growing realization that this idea goes too far, even among the largest partners. This awareness is also growing in Germany. I hope this will translate into the final decision and opposition of the German government
– he said.
Szynkowski vel Sęk pointed out that the Polish side advocates the transformation of different parts of the economy towards more ecological solutions, but this must be done through evolution.
This cannot be done in a revolutionary and ideological way and at the expense of the citizens
– added.
According to the EU minister, citizens should receive different incentives instead of prohibitions.
The European Union must be an area of freedom, not an area of prohibitions and orders, he stressed.
Not only will we consistently oppose the ban on registration of internal combustion vehicles after 2035, but I also hope to build an effective coalition on this issue
he said.
Climate neutral
The ban on the registration of vehicles that emit exhaust gases from 2035, planned and adopted so far by the European Parliament, stems from EU regulations to achieve climate neutrality in the EU by 2050.
On 27 October 2022, the EU Council and the EP reached an agreement on stricter CO2 emission standards for new cars and vans. According to the regulations, it will not be possible to register new cars and vans with an internal combustion engine from 2035 in any EU Member State.
On February 14, the European Parliament approved the CO2 reduction targets for new passenger cars and commercial vehicles. This is part of the “Ready for 55” package. The new regulations pave the way to the target of zero CO2 emissions from new cars and vans by 2035. The EU target is to reduce CO2 emissions from new cars and vans by 100%. compared to 2021. Intermediate emission reduction targets for 2030 are set at 55%. for passenger cars and 50 percent. for vans.
