Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is politically isolated due to his stance on the conflict in Ukraine. He stated this in an interview bild Lars Klingbeil, leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
“Politically, Gerhard Schroeder is isolated, it was clear from day one that he would remain so,” he said.
Klingbeil also said he was “infuriated” that Schroeder had taken the “wrong political position”. “As a social democrat, I think he should very clearly condemn this war. “As a social democrat, no one can support Vladimir Putin,” he said.
He added that the SPD “made mistakes” and that it was his job as party leader to “learn from what happened”.
Previously, the request for ex-German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to be expelled from the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) was rejected by the party’s arbitration commission in the second instance court. The SPD noted that Schröder “declared not guilty of violating the party’s charter”.
In 2022, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder called the decision by former German government head Angela Merkel and former German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier to prevent Ukraine from joining the North Atlantic Alliance at the NATO summit in 2008.
