We tell the perpetrators of Russian war crimes in Ukraine that punishment will be inevitable and that the society of the free world will stand in solidarity with Ukraine, the Prosecutor General and Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro said in Lviv on Friday.
Minister Ziobro took part in the “United for Justice” conference on Friday in Lviv, dedicated to solutions that will enable those responsible for Russian war crimes in Ukraine to be held accountable.
Also present at the opening of the conference were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Latvian President Egils Levits, US Attorney General Merrick Garland, EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, politicians, diplomats and heads of prosecutors from several European countries.
In his speech, Ziobro pointed out that “conversations about the architecture of criminal responsibility of the perpetrators of crimes that have affected so many lives in Ukraine” are ongoing in Lviv.
We tell the same perpetrators that punishment will be inevitable, that crime will not pay, that the society of the free world will act in solidarity with Ukraine
said the head of MS.
He added that this is also reflected in the actions of the Polish prosecutor’s office.
Four days after Russia attacked Ukraine, I ordered an investigation into Russia’s attack on a sovereign country. Together with other countries: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Romania, Slovenia, we have set up a team at the ICC that conducts intensive research
said Minister Ziobro. He said that Polish detectives had already collected testimonies from more than 1.7 thousand. witnesses and presented much material evidence.
I hope we will enrich this conference for thoughts on how to effectively hold Russian perpetrators of crimes accountable in the future. We must not forget the victims of Irpień, Bucza and other Ukrainian cities. We must honor and remember them, for the sake of truth
stressed Ziobro.
The minister pointed out that when President Lech Kaczyński uttered the famous words 15 years ago in Tbilisi: “Today Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine, the day after tomorrow the Baltic States and later – Poland”, protesting against Russian aggression against Georgia, “the world was in disbelief “.
I trust that the international community will bring the perpetrators of these appalling crimes to justice
stressed Ziobro.
“A sign of hope”
When asked about the conference by PAP and TVP, the head of MS replied:
It is a sign of hope that the free world is reflecting on the criminal responsibility of the criminals for the attack on Ukraine and the myriad crimes committed in Bucha, Irpin and dozens of other Ukrainian cities.
As he emphasized, it gives hope that the world is responding to these crimes in a very different way than before. The minister recalled the words spoken by President Lech Kaczyński in Tbilisi in 2008:
Today Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine. Later it may be time for my country, Poland.
The president also called for a tough response, including in the legal dimension. Unfortunately there was no response
Ziobro said.
Today this meeting is a good change when it comes to thinking about the European elites, the elites of the free world. It is also time to prepare the architecture associated with bringing criminals to justice. I hope this is the chance this meeting gives
said the minister.
He noted that the participation of the Polish authorities in these activities is “very important”.
We were the second country after Ukraine to launch an investigation into Russia’s crimes and attack on Ukraine. I made this decision in consultation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine, and then we formed an international investigation team together
remarked Ziobro.
Zelensky: The court will solve the problem of impossibility of prosecution
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the United Nations General Assembly to adopt a draft resolution from Ukraine that “would contribute to the establishment of a special tribunal for crimes of aggression against Ukraine”.
This Court will become a link that will solve the problem of the inability of the International Criminal Court to prosecute the crime of aggression
– he said.
He stressed that any shot that kills an innocent must be followed by a lawful and just conviction of the murderer, and that any violence that destroys human life must be met by a just judicial decision that protects human dignity.
According to the president, special attention should be paid to crimes committed by Russia against Ukrainian children.
It involves deporting and abducting children and attempting to erase the child’s national and family identity
he announced.
Zelensky emphasized that more than 70,000 have already been documented. of Russian war crimes, but not all crimes are known yet.
We have data on thousands of civilian casualties from Russian attacks. Thousands… But it is clear that the occupier has cost the lives of many more people
he noticed.
