The “realists” are not yet pushing for an alliance with Putin, just as they see the failed alliance with Hitler in 1939 as beneficial to Poland, but everything is ahead of us.
In fact, they say the same thing about the Warsaw uprising and the war of defense of Ukraine invaded by Russia. They have not yet called the heroic fight of the Ukrainians “22 madness”, but it is somewhere in the air. For this the so-called realists could (if they thought about it) call the “23 madness” the military and material aid that Poland has provided to Ukraine. This is “madness”, because the Polish government and the president must act under the dictates of Kiev and systematically involve Washington and Poland in the war. And we have no interest in that. It is enough to wait and let others act or pretend.
Poland will not be in any danger from Russia if it does not sideline with Ukraine and stop being teased by the United States – this is not an explicit statement, but an obvious statement of the “realists”. That is why they praise the attitude of Viktor Orban and Hungary. He is a realist who does not care about commitments and gestures because his only commitment is to take care of the Hungarians. Not about Ukrainians or anyone. Hungary may be accused of pursuing Putin’s interests, but its home country, and another safe country, may not care. And Poland should do the same.
And what if Poland did the same as Hungary, and yet it was not safe at all, because it is a country that is incomparably more powerful, more important and completely different from Hungary and therefore fulfills other functions? “Realists” do not really believe in this, because the “doctrine of realism” should be an absolute guarantee of security. Putin is not attacking the “realists”. However, if he goes berserk and violates the “doctrine of realism”, then NATO allies must come to our rescue, as they are required to do so by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
We don’t have to or should even lift a finger at Ukraine, and NATO allies have to help us, their soldiers have to die for us, their societies have to pay for it, etc., because these are the rules. It doesn’t work the other way around, so we are not obliged to do anything. And the main argument: Ukraine is not in NATO, so there are no commitments, except perhaps some humanitarian gestures. Therefore, not only Poland, but also Romania and the Czech Republic act stupidly, and especially small countries that are vulnerable to Putin’s anger – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. And the Germans, who initially behaved very reasonably, are also acting more and more stupidly.
What would the Poles care if Putin took Ukraine? That much would be needed and our cabin would still be out of the country, because the “doctrine of realism” would protect us. The same would happen if, without the war, Putin occupied Belarus and completely wiped it out. Simply put, Poland would only have a very long border with Russia or its occupied territories – from Braniewo in the north to Krzemieniec at the intersection of today’s Polish-Slovak-Ukrainian border. With the small exception of the so-called Isthmus of Suwałki, but this too, for the sake of peace, could be arranged in some way to temper militant Lithuania at the same time.
Those who do not want war with Russia will not get it, the ‘realists’ imply. So all Russian attacks so far must be the result of the attacked countries not wanting peace. And peace lies in cooperation with Russia. So even those former Soviet republics, now sovereign states, which – like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan or Kyrgyzstan – have not adopted the “doctrine of realism”, but in various ways distance themselves from Russia and even oppose it. This can be nice, but it’s completely impractical. If the authorities of these countries cared about their own nations, they would long ago have adopted the “doctrine of realism” and basked in the warmth of a protective Putin.
At this point you can already move on to the analogy between “madness ’44” and “madness of ’22” or “madness of ’23”. According to the “realists”, Generals Tadeusz Bór-Komorowski, Tadeusz Pełczyński, Leopold Okulicki or Antoni Chruściel acted just as stupidly and even criminally as President Andrzej Duda, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Chief of the Ministry of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak or Chief of Staff General Rajmund Andrzejczak. now in action. Now and in 1944 people had to be guided by the “doctrine of realism”. It was expressed poetically and pop-culturally by actress Maria Peszek in the song “Sorry Polsko”: “If there was a war, I would be calm. (…) I should not have to choose or think how I would live here. Just be, just be I wouldn’t run through the sewer with a gun I wouldn’t give you a single drop of blood Poland It’s enough to adopt the “doctrine of realism”.
And what if home-grown insurgents talked about betrayal and collaboration, drew analogies with Philippe Pétain, Pierre Laval or Vidkun Quisling? The most important thing is that our cabin stays out of the country. Hitler was a proponent of the “doctrine of realism” and Putin certainly respects it. Therefore, “realists” believe that everything that was heroic in the Warsaw Uprising turned out to be stupid, naive, sentimental, and above all, impractical. Always, and this is the essence of the “doctrine of realism”, anti-heroic pragmatism counts. It follows immediately that capitulation and cooperation should be the most desirable attitude. And if necessary, it also willingly and en masse draws modern equivalents of the Volksliste. Therefore, any action in the name of honor and dignity should be ridiculed because it is harmful.
According to the “doctrine of realism”, recognized for example by thousands of German intellectuals who wrote letters to the government in Berlin, Ukraine should surrender quickly and thus avoid terrible losses, destruction and enormous material losses, without exposing the rest of Europe. to Putin’s wrath, perhaps even in the form of a nuclear strike. Realists are not yet pressing for an alliance with Putin, just as they consider the failed alliance with Hitler in 1939 favorable for Poland, but everything is ahead of us. And those who claim that “realists” are mere cowards and people with a collaborative mindset are dead wrong. They really care about the content of the nation and the material wealth of the Poles. And these are guaranteed only by the “doctrine of realism”. How contrary to what was presented in Warsaw and Kiev by US President Joe Biden.
