President Joe Biden’s visit was historic for its circumstances and unprecedentedness, but the speech itself was not outstanding or groundbreaking. The White House, however, sent a clear political signal to the Poles.
For the first time, an American leader visited the attacked country and met with its authorities, expressing his support for the defenders, and then flew to Poland for the second time in a year, expressing his appreciation for our country and society – these are exceptional contexts. However, the leader of the free world did not include in his speech any suggestion regarding the support of any of Poland’s political parties, even between the lines.
Trump singled out Andrzej Duda as his friend, repaying the pro-American character of the presidential palace and highlighting ties between the two conservative camps. Biden was not referring to the exceptionally pro-Atlantic policies of the Polish government team or to the opposition ideological community. Not a word was said that Warsaw was hard on Russia, not even half a syllable about the rule of law, modernity and LGBT. The US president was Andrzej Duda’s guest, but without any lavishness it was limited to official ceremonies, and he devoted time to the opposition in humiliating seconds – which, by the way, does not prevent the latter from enjoying a glass bead like a 19th-century Zimbabwean. Washington thus clearly indicated that after the parliamentary elections, it would hold talks and try to build an alliance with every authority on the Vistula.
The symmetry of the White House stems from the behavior of Marek Brzezinski, who — torn between the hard West’s interest in Russia and the rainbow flag and talk of liberalism — presents no political camp in Poland as closer to America. Well, notable sons of notable fathers are common throughout history.
But let’s compare the attitude of America – today, but also Trump’s – with the attitude of Western European salons. From Berlin and Brussels, from the mouths of Ursula von der Leyen, Katarina Barley and the German media and the political establishment, contemptuous words against Poland’s political choices are constantly pouring out. The President of the European Commission tenderly expressing the hope that Tusk will soon become Prime Minister, Barley wanting to starve Poland to death, Eurocrats withholding money for Poland, for which we still pay installments and interest because they don’t like it, and windmills that are set up differently stand, and this is the bell for a pause in parliamentary debates or the act of baptism of a member of the Supreme Court is a clear expression of pity and contempt for our country, contempt for our aspirations to be a subject, not an object, in international politics. Yes, Trump had his sympathies here, but he did not oppose the liberals, as the Germans disapprove of the Warsaw conservatives in the EU structures.
In this sense, America is proving to be a more important and demanding ally. The EU mainstream demands above all servility, agreement with the ideological agenda, submission to and acceptance of Poland’s secondary position. To lure the US president to Poland, one must be a security leader in the region, active in the anti-Russian alliance, militarily important and politically independent. To earn a pat on the back from the leaders of Germany and France, you need to do the exact opposite. Just sit quietly.
