Further sanctions against Russia – according to the head of the parliamentary committee for foreign affairs, Radosław Fogel (PiS), this is the main issue Poland will raise at the EU summit. We will call for the transfer of money from frozen Russian assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine and the fight against higher energy prices, he added.
An extraordinary meeting of the European Council will start in Brussels on Thursday, where EU heads of state and government will discuss Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the economy and illegal immigration.
When asked on Polish radio on Thursday what Poland will fight for at this summit, Fogiel said it was mainly about further sanctions against Russia.
We will call for the transfer of money from frozen Russian assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine and the fight against higher energy prices
– he said.
He added that the issue of starting Ukraine’s accession process is also likely to arise.
The summit will be attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has visited London and Paris. According to unofficial information, first of all, he will appeal to the leaders of the “27” for more weapons for Ukraine, including long-range rocket artillery, tanks, aircraft and ammunition.
The chairman comes to Brussels to achieve concrete results. First of all, it concerns weapons. We need the support of the European Council to accelerate the delivery of arms to Ukraine
A representative of the Ukrainian authorities told reporters on Wednesday.
As he added, while the European Council does not decide on arms deliveries, and this decision rests with the individual capitals of the EU, the summit can send a strong political signal.
President Zelensky’s appeal
Zelensky will also call for an acceleration of EU actions to allow Ukraine to join the community.
We are convinced that the decision to start accession negotiations can be taken as early as this year
the Ukrainian official said.
EU leaders will also discuss how to ensure the EU’s long-term competitiveness, prosperity and global position. Therefore, the topic of discussion will be about ways to exploit the full potential of the EU’s internal market. They will also consider measures to be taken to help EU industry.
The European Council will discuss illegal immigration, focusing on effective control of external borders and broader measures in countries of origin.
