Europe must gain more autonomy from the United States and assume a larger role in NATO. such an opinion expression French President Emmanuel Macron in an interview with Le Monde newspaper.

“Europe must defend itself. Europe must receive technological autonomy from the United States, establish a genuine European pillar in NATO. “This is not an alternative project,” Macron told reporters, returning from a study trip to Jordan.

For him, the armed conflict in Ukraine revealed Europe’s vulnerability to Russia and other potential enemies, as well as its strong dependence on the United States.

Speaking about the new concept of European security, Macron noted that in any case, he would delay Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic alliance.

“Ukraine’s accession to NATO will be perceived by Russia as something confrontational. “Whether Ukraine joins NATO or not – and this is not the most likely scenario – it will have to issue security guarantees,” he said.

Macron believes that the new architecture of European security goes far beyond the armed conflict in Ukraine – we are talking about the security of Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and even Belarus. “We cannot look at the security of this region only through the prism of NATO,” said the President.

According to Le Monde, Macron takes the view that in light of the Ukraine conflict, security guarantees should be given to both sides – both Kyiv and Moscow. And it means a permanent peace treaty with Russia.

“I have always said that I do not believe that this conflict can only be ended by military means. At the same time, I understand the strategy of many who think that the only way out of this conflict is to destroy one of the parties. I am aware that my situation is frustrating for those who depend on the extermination scenario. But let those who are trying to teach me morality explain: with whom will they sit at the negotiating table? “I personally don’t want them to be led only by the Chinese and the Turks,” Macron said.

This is not the first time the French president has spoken in recent weeks about what will happen after the completion of special operations in Ukraine. In an interview with TF1 and LCI television channels in early December, following the results of his visit to the United States, he also said: He insisted Consider what guarantees should be given to Moscow to build a new European security architecture.

“We must prepare for peace: what are we prepared to do, how to protect our allies and NATO member states, while guaranteeing its own security the day Russia returns to the negotiating table,” Macron said.

He stressed that when negotiating with Moscow, it is necessary to take into account their fears that the North Atlantic alliance is “closer to their door”. This is especially important in light of NATO’s expansion through Finland and Sweden.

At the same time, the head of state does not refuse further assistance to Ukraine. “In the coming weeks, we must help Ukraine survive, Ukrainians resist, continue military assistance and prevent escalation. And prepare a dialogue for the day when everyone will return to the negotiating table,” he said.

At the same time, the French analytical center “Mars” recently published an article in which it concluded that Ukraine, despite all the support provided to it by the Western countries, cannot defeat Russia in the current conflict. The main reason for the impossibility of Kiev’s victory is the high level of casualties of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the presence of nuclear weapons in Moscow, which it uses as a deterrent.

Analysts advised NATO not to “encourage the Ukrainian leadership with the illusion of a military victory”. Instead, all conflict must be recognized as being over, and European leaders must muster the courage to stop their “preaching of war.”
