According to reports from Wirtualna Polska on Monday, Prime Minister Morawiecki promised the players of the Polish football team ahead of their departure for the World Cup in Qatar that they would receive a “bonus of at least PLN 30 million” if they progressed beyond the group stage. . This information sparked a wave of criticism. On Monday, government spokesman Piotr Müller said the prime minister had discussed the fund for training or infrastructure development with the president of the Polish Football Association and the coach of the football team; condition was to advance from the group to the World Cup.
On Tuesday afternoon, the head of government posted a message on Facebook about the subject. In it, he emphasized that the departure of the Polish national team after 36 years from the group and playing in the 1/8 finals of the World Cup is a great joy. He judged that although we were eliminated in the knockout stage of the World Cup, we played a good game against the current world champion – the French national team.
The Poles took up the thrown gauntlet
Morawiecki wrote.
“However, our staff gave us more than we expected”
What was missing? First of all experience playing at this level and a bit of luck. However, our staff gave us more than we could expect. The problem of Polish football has been the level of funding for years. The brutal truth of football is that the big games are where the big money is
stressed the prime minister.
He considered that it is the role of the state to support the development of this most popular sport, and – as he added – this applies primarily to funds for youth training, infrastructure construction, but also the development and support of talents.
We will allocate additional resources for this
he assured.
Poland’s successful performance at the World Cup is a good opportunity to start a discussion about the future of Polish football. I am convinced that without increasing the budget for Polish football, it will be difficult for us to compete with the best, and our players have shown that it is possible. They have shown that it is within our reach. I also believe that rewarding results at the most prestigious tournaments is an important part of the whole system and at the same time the role of the association and the main sponsors.
noted Morawiecki.
Finally: there will be no government money for bonuses for football players
said the prime minister.
On Sunday, Poland was eliminated in the 1/8 final of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar after a 3-1 defeat to France.
