Israel’s drift

United Nations was created andState of Israel inside 1947 At the request of Great Britain, because the British, at the end of the Second World War, no longer wanted to continue to assume responsibilities as the administrative power of the territories with which they had contracted after the First World War. Previously, the United Kingdom had committed to creating a world in 1917. “Jewish national home” in Palestine by call Balfour Declaration. But London soon found itself caught in the grip of Jewish and Arab nationalism, which saw frequent clashes in the 1930s.

In 1947, the UN first proposed a solution based on: coexistence of two states Dividing the land between Jews and Arabs. The formula did not fully satisfy either party, but it resolved the conflict and satisfied the basic desires of both. Although the decision ensured the internationalization of Jerusalem, moderate Zionists led by David Ben-Gurion and Chaim Weizmann accepted the so-called Partition Plan. Although critics fiercely attacked the moderates, they knew how to protect themselves and the project moved forward. The Arabs, on the other hand, flatly refused to share their lands with the Zionists. This was a very absurd attitude, because this rudeness at the time of its founding had very negative consequences for the Arab cause: Palestine was never born as a state.

The rest of the story is well known: Shortly after the founding of the Jewish state, in 1948, forces of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon declared the first war against Israel and lost it miserably. There was constant conflict thereafter, and in June 1967 the Six-Day War broke out between Israel on the one hand and Egypt, Jordan and Syria on the other. Eventually, Israel doubled its territory to include the Sinai Peninsula, Golan Heights, Gaza, and the West Bank. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, and the area came under Hamas control in 2007 after a brief civil war with rival Palestinian group Fatah, which is now the main group supporting the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. After Hamas took control of Gaza, Israel and Egypt imposed a strict siege on the region by land, air and sea, and this siege still continues.

In 2003, United States President George W. Bush presented “Middle East: Road Map to Peace.” Israeli and Palestinian leaders agreed on the broad outlines of the plan, but the countries did not finalize this new two-state solution. Netanyahu’s figure has been decisive in Israel’s development over the last quarter century. He succeeded Labor’s Simon Peres as head of government in 1996 for two terms: until 1999, when he was succeeded by Ehud Barak, and from 2009 until brief stays in opposition. Netanyahu, a member of the conservative Likud, is shifting Israel’s public life to the right in the face of an inexplicable decline in the left that has all but disappeared. Despite the undoubted moral authority of progressive progressives like Simon Peres or Shlomo Ben Ami, the great Palestinian threat that Israelis have to live with only receives a heavy response. And in practice, successive Netanyahu governments represent an inexorable drift towards ultraconservative nationalism and religious and militant Zionism. Moreover, Israel’s military superiority has enabled it to carve out successive illegally colonized chunks of Palestinian territory; So much so that today the rational disintegration of two states cannot be made acceptable to everyone.

Israeli democracy, which has been greatly corrupted by Netayahu, who subordinated the judiciary to the executive branch, undoubtedly has the right to defend itself. However, even if they win this war, like the previous wars, the problem will continue. Israel’s historical friends, Europe and the United States, have long given up on mediating against Zionist goalkeeping. And the peaceful existence of the Jewish people will be impossible unless they first solve the difficult practice of living together with those who have the same historical rights where they are.
