The rest of the story is well known: Shortly after the founding of the Jewish state, in 1948, forces of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon declared the first war against Israel and lost it miserably. There was constant conflict thereafter, and in June 1967 the Six-Day War broke out between Israel on the one hand and Egypt, Jordan and Syria on the other. Eventually, Israel doubled its territory to include the Sinai Peninsula, Golan Heights, Gaza, and the West Bank. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005, and the area came under Hamas control in 2007 after a brief civil war with rival Palestinian group Fatah, which is now the main group supporting the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank. After Hamas took control of Gaza, Israel and Egypt imposed a strict siege on the region by land, air and sea, and this siege still continues.
In 2003, United States President George W. Bush presented “Middle East: Road Map to Peace.” Israeli and Palestinian leaders agreed on the broad outlines of the plan, but the countries did not finalize this new two-state solution.
