Awards and red carpet season has arrived for the Golden Globes. Among the glamour, several looks sparked debate with oversized details, extreme silhouettes, loud colors, and unusual patterns. The aim is style, but some outfits missed the mark and did not flatter the wearers at all.
SOS stylists present a recap of the less successful dresses from the 2024 Golden Globes:
Selena Gomez misses Marilyn
She was nominated for a role in the film Just Murders in the Building. Selena Gomez arrived on the red carpet channeling Marilyn in a famous scene from Upskirts and Crazy. Yet Armani Privé delivered a red, oddly asymmetrical skirt tied in three knots, which looked restrictive and bulky despite her fit figure. The choice felt heavy and did not complement the wearer’s silhouette.
Billy Eilish, schoolgirl XL
Billie Eilish continues to surprise with bold statements. This time she shifted away from past Met Gala glam in favor of a stark look featuring an oversized blazer with a Peter Pan collar, a tie, and a Willy Chavarria top paired with a skirt. The hair was styled in a high bun with red accents, echoing prior experiments. The overall vibe leaned more theatrical than chic, and the styling drew heavy commentary.
Jodie Foster, 19th-century governess
Jodie Foster, nominated for Nyad, appeared in an all black look from Alberta Ferretti PF24. The ensemble featured a collared shirt with a buttoned placket accented by silver details and a floor-length skirt. Minimal adornment, a belt as the sole accessory, and a restrained silhouette gave a nod to a 19th century governess aesthetic without translating into contemporary appeal.
Bella Ramsey, Star Trek style
Bella Ramsey opted for a minimalist Prada look suitable for wandering the Globes red carpet: gray trousers, a light blue zip jacket, and boots. The young star of The Last of Us reminded audiences of retro futuristic vibes reminiscent of Star Trek in a restrained, understated way.
Elizabeth Olsen is a bold guest
Elizabeth Olsen wore a bridal-inspired white dress from a Vivienne Westwood 2023 collection. The bodice featured lace patterns and a knee-length skirt that ended in a playful taffeta train, creating a fairy-tale look. While striking, the design did not translate into a modern red carpet moment for all audiences.
Florence Pugh, provocateur
Florence Pugh chose a daring red Valentino gown with rose embellishments and sheer elements. The cut was very low and the fabric highly transparent, which drew attention to the wardrobe choice on camera. The presence of the star at the event echoed similar bold moments seen in recent red carpet moments, drawing mixed reactions from the audience and producers alike as the look moved through the broadcast.
