Bleeding gums are a classic sign of gum inflammation and may point to one of two inflammatory conditions. In recognition of World Oral Health Day, observed on March 20, a European Medical Center dentist-therapist, Pavel Pisarev, spoke with a health news outlet about the basics of daily oral care.

According to the expert, the real goal of brushing is not just the act itself but the careful and complete removal of dental plaque. For instance, brushing should be done regularly every 12 hours to keep plaque under control. Cutting back on sugars and refined carbohydrates also lowers the risk of tooth decay and keeps the mouth healthier overall.

There are two practical ways to assess how well teeth have been cleaned. First, after brushing, use a toothpick to gently probe along the gumline of several teeth. If the tip shows any coating, the cleaning needs to be extended. Second, consider a plaque-disclosing agent. These products come as tablets or a rinse that temporarily stains plaque in different colors, helping to reveal missed areas and guide improved technique, the expert noted.

Bleeding gums often occur during brushing or when chewing hard foods. This symptom usually means the gums are weakened and an inflammatory process is underway. Common culprits include deposits of soft plaque or hard tartar. Dental deposits harbor bacteria and toxins that trigger gum inflammation. Inflammation increases capillary fragility and permeability, which is why blood may appear during brushing, along with swelling, redness, or a bluish tint at the gum margin and between teeth. Certain medications taken for high blood pressure, anticoagulants, epilepsy therapies, and some hormonal contraceptives can also contribute to gum bleeding, the doctor explained.

Other contributing factors include systemic conditions such as leukemia or diabetes, heavy metal exposure, or hormonal changes during pregnancy. These factors can heighten the risk of gum inflammation and bleeding.

In any case of bleeding gums, it is important to arrange a dental consultation promptly. After professional plaque removal, a clinician can demonstrate the correct brushing technique to prevent recurrence. Remember, a cornerstone of preventing bleeding gums is consistent, high-quality oral hygiene, including the regular use of supplementary tools such as floss and appropriate toothbrushes, the dentist advised.

Earlier discussions have also covered how to choose between electric and manual toothbrushes, offering guidance on selecting the option that best fits an individual’s needs and lifestyle.
