On World Oceans Day, June 8, the ocean’s essential role in sustaining life is highlighted and people are encouraged to take concrete steps to safeguard it. Data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature indicates that more than a million tons of plastic have accumulated in the Mediterranean region, and annual waste generation remains high. Without effective waste management, the scale of this problem is expected to double by the year 2040. In response to this global challenge, two Alicante brands, Germaine de Capuccini and Trendsplant, have pledged to manage natural resources responsibly. They join forces to support marine protection, raise awareness, promote practical action, and advocate for sustainable practices that benefit coastal communities and ecosystems alike.
Globally, the United Nations reports reveal that around eight million tons of plastic enter the oceans each year. If the current trajectory continues, projections suggest that by mid-century plastic waste could surpass fish in the seas. In light of this, the two brands actively participate in World Oceans Day campaigns alongside their partner associations. They invite supporters in Alicante and beyond to participate in a beach cleanup event scheduled for Sunday, June 12, aimed at removing waste from one of the coasts in the province. The activity is designed to last two to three hours, with participants walking from Carabassi beach in the Elche municipality to Ermita beach in Santa Pola, traversing coastal areas including beaches, rocks, sand dunes, and dunes, while gathering refuse along the route. The gathering will run from nine in the morning until noon. This hands on effort demonstrates a practical commitment to preserving the shoreline and protecting marine life for local residents and visitors alike.
The overarching objective of World Oceans Day is to illuminate the issue of submerged debris that rests on the sea floor and to mobilize action across multiple levels of society. By hosting activities in several municipalities across the region, the initiative aims to raise public awareness and encourage involvement by individuals, businesses, schools, and government bodies. The goal is to foster a culture of responsibility for maintaining beach cleanliness and environmental quality through respectful conduct, policy improvements, and education campaigns that inform citizens about the importance of recycling and reusing materials. In addition, this effort contributes to citizen science projects designed to promote sustainable waste management and the recovery of usable materials. It is important to note that roughly seven hundred marine species are affected by this form of pollution, and the plastic load poses a threat to many fishes, sea turtles, marine mammals, and birds found in the Mediterranean.
Germaine de Capuccini traces its origins to Alcoy, nearly six decades ago, with a mission to deliver high quality skincare. The new Timexpert Sun line has been refreshed with Ocean Respect formulations that protect skin, shield against UV radiation, and respect the environment. Trendsplant is a newer clothing brand that seeks to make a positive impact on environmental and social well being through its operations. Its swimwear collection uses Seaqual Yarn, a fabric derived from plastics gathered from oceans, and several garments are produced from organic cotton. Additionally, the pants in the collection are manufactured in Spain using sustainable dyeing methods that minimize environmental impact. These choices reflect a broader commitment to responsible production and consumption that aligns with contemporary consumer expectations in North America.
