can’t ask for help

A national police operation in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat led to the detention of a man suspected of severely abusing and imprisoning his girlfriend. The authorities reported that the couple, both of whom are 18 years old, were subjected to continuous mistreatment over an extended period.

Investigators said the probe started after an anonymous tip described how the intervention sexually abused and deprived the young woman of her freedom, exposing a pattern of violence and coercion that extended to threats against her family. The victim’s routine life had been severely restricted, with her rarely leaving a locked room and lacking access to the keys to her own home.

According to the officers, the woman was often required to obtain permission to move about the house or even to use the bathroom. The prevailing threats against both herself and her relatives deepened the control exercised by the aggressor. On occasion, the assailant allegedly used alcohol to intoxicate her and then used a lighter to threaten or intimidate, adding a layer of physical danger to the abuse.

On a mission to locate the victim and the suspect, the police filed the case with the court. By April 19, authorities located the couple and arrested the man. The woman was reportedly taken to a hospital for medical assessment and care. At the time of arrest, investigators confirmed that the suspect possessed the victim’s mobile device, effectively cutting off any possibility of seeking help or escape at that moment.

By April 21, the detainee had been presented to the prosecutor and was held without bail under the jurisdiction of the violence against women court in Esplugues de Llobregat. The case is being overseen by the relevant authorities as they pursue legal actions against the alleged abuser and ensure the safety of the victim and any other potential witnesses.

As a safety measure, authorities remind the public that help exists for victims of all forms of violence against women. The national helpline operates free and confidentially in numerous languages and does not affect the caller’s billing. Additional information and counseling services are available through official channels, and specialized resources are in place for minors who may need support. Victims are encouraged to contact local police or the dedicated violence against women units for immediate assistance and protection. Support networks and crisis services remain available to those in need, including social workers and victim advocacy groups, all working in concert to provide safety, resources, and a path toward recovery.
