Weather Shifts in Moscow and Across Russia: Cold Start, Warm Rise, and Snow Possibilities

The Scientific Director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, stated that Moscow will continue to experience cold mornings from Sunday through Wednesday. A notable warming trend is expected starting Thursday, October 12, with the daytime air temperature in the city rising by three to four degrees above the climate norm, according to reports from TASS. This pattern suggests a brief pause in the chill before a sharper shift in temperatures as the week progresses.

Vilfand noted that the current weather conditions are unusual for the season. The forecast indicates temperatures will run about four degrees Celsius below normal on Sunday and through the middle of the week, before a pronounced climb above the normal range occurs later in the week. The city is positioned in a transitional zone where the late autumn chill can give way to a quick surge in warmth, a scenario closely monitored by meteorologists for its potential impact on daily activities and urban planning.

In addition, Vilfand explained that on Sunday Moscow will be near the periphery of a hurricane that is moving toward the northeast, contributing to the expected low temperatures at the onset of the period. This meteorological setup underscores the role of distant, fast-moving air masses in shaping short-term temperature swings in the megacity, even as other weather systems evolve over the broader region.

Earlier, forecaster and climatologist Alexander Shuvalov noted that a second wave of early autumn warmth could arrive in the Moscow region during the second half of October. He described a potential Indian summer scenario, where sunny spells and milder afternoons briefly offset the early-season cold. Such shifts are typical for this transition period when mean temperatures oscillate as high- and low-pressure systems contend for dominance across central Russia.

Following the expected cooldown, warmer conditions are not anticipated to persist for long. Beginning October 12, daytime temperatures in the region are expected to hover near plus ten Celsius, with overnight lows remaining cool and dry weather patterns maintaining stability for a short interval. There is even a possibility that the month could end with the first snowfall, a prospect that often emerges in late October as cold air entrenches itself and moisture from atmospheric fronts coalesces into flurries in some districts.

Meanwhile, Dagestan reported a notable weather event as summer snow fell for the first time in four years, a reminder of the region’s dramatic temperature fluctuations and the broad diversity of Russia’s climate across its vast territory. This occurrence, though isolated, highlights how contrasting weather regimes can unfold within a single country, reflecting the wide range of meteorological influences that Russian forecasters track daily across different republics and regions. Residents are advised to monitor official updates and prepare for rapid changes in conditions as the season transitions from autumnal chill to intermittent bursts of warmth and, potentially, late snow in some areas.
