The young Spanish man admitted to the intensive care unit of a Cancún hospital has woken up, but he remains unable to recall events, does not know where he is, and cannot speak. Today he will be visited by Spain’s honorary consul.

These details were shared with EFE by Marta Parada, the hospitalized man’s sister-in-law, who explained that over the past two days his sedation has been gradually reduced. He has regained consciousness and responded to stimuli, though doctors do not currently consider transferring him back to Spain advisable.

“We are told to wait, because his pulmonary and respiratory condition is still severely compromised; that is what is affected most”, she added.

“But it is very good news that he has awakened and is responding fairly well”, she emphasized, noting that last night doctors attempted to remove the breathing tube. He is receiving high doses of oxygen because he experiences episodes of suffocation, but, for now, he is responding positively.

The man, Adrián Fernández, and his wife, Sofía Parada, were on their honeymoon at a Cancún hotel with their seven-year-old son when a digestive disorder led to a swimming pool incident and a subsequent drowning, which triggered a cardiorespiratory arrest.

Rescuers managed to restart his heart and transported him to the nearest hospital, located about an hour from the hotel. He arrived in critical condition and was later moved to a different center where he remained in an induced coma.

With regard to a possible transfer to a hospital in Spain, Marta Parada said they have not received any information yet and they do not know if the Government will cover the costs. She also shared that her sister has mentioned that the honorary consul will visit later today, suggesting that the matter may be discussed then. Until now, nothing has been clarified, and they hope for more details today.

Marta Parada added that her nephew, the seven-year-old son, arrived in Spain in good condition. He is with his family and has returned to school. He will resume normal life because he does not fully grasp the seriousness of the situation.

Regarding the hospital expenses in Cancún, which have climbed to nearly 90,000 euros, with about 20,000 euros covered by insurance, she noted that many people have offered considerable help. The family has continued to contribute financially because, besides the hospital stay, daily life in Cancún still requires shelter, meals, and basic necessities.

The father of Adrián and the father of Sofía traveled to Cancún to provide support, and the three of them are sharing a single room in a modest pension with two beds to minimize costs. They have moved between three hotels and now stay in a pension, trying to keep expenses as low as possible, but the bills keep climbing with each passing day, Marta Parada explained.

According to her, the family is considering taking out a bank loan as their savings dwindle. They are unsure whether Adrián may remain hospitalized for another week or perhaps ten more days in Cancún, she added.

When he returns to Spain, he is expected to be admitted to the intensive care unit of the Ribera Hospital in Alzira. Although the current mood is optimistic because he has woken up, there remains a fear that any new complication could arise and that a respiratory infection or a stomach upset could impact his condition. The doctors reportedly believe that remaining at the Cancún facility is prudent for the time being, to monitor any potential changes before the final transfer.

“That is why the medical team thinks he should stay there for now. He has just awakened, and he will likely remain in the intensive care unit for several more days. We must continue to handle the payments”, Marta Parada stated, concluding, “We will watch how the week unfolds. The hope is that the day will come when he is back home with us.”
