Researchers from the University of Edinburgh conducted a study exploring how taste and touch receptors on the tongue form distinctive patterns. These patterns resemble fingerprints and may influence individual taste preferences and tactile experiences. The findings were published in Scientific Reports, highlighting a fresh view of how the tongue encodes sensory information and personal flavor profiles.

Within each square centimeter of the tongue lie up to 200 papillae, some of which hold taste buds while others are filamentous and lack taste buds. These structures help determine the texture of food and convey information about satiety to the brain, contributing to how hungry a person feels and how they perceive meals.

Using three dimensional imaging of more than 2,000 papillae from 15 participants, researchers applied artificial intelligence to distinguish which language belonged to each subject in nearly half of the cases. The study also observed that women and younger adults tended to have more pointed papillae, a feature linked to sensory processing and perception.

Earlier studies noted that women and younger individuals often exhibit a higher density of mushroom-shaped papillae, a pattern associated with heightened taste sensitivity and flavor discernment.

The researchers suggest that deciphering the complex layout of language surfaces moves science forward toward appreciating how oral textures and taste maps shape everyday eating experiences. This advance offers potential for designing personalized dining experiences that better match individual flavor preferences and sensory responses.
