A Crimean resident, Igor Korchinsky, has received an 18-year prison sentence for plotting to assassinate the republic’s leader, Sergei Aksenov. The verdict was announced by the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.
According to the statement, the court ordered Korchinsky to serve the first four years of his sentence in a standard prison, followed by the remaining years in a maximum-security penal colony. A fine of 350 thousand rubles accompanies the sentence.
Investigators found that Korchinsky, a resident of Crimea, established contact with Ukrainian intelligence services, which trained him to work with explosives. In June 2023, he retrieved a bomb from a stash with the intent to place it in Aksenov’s car and detonate it.
Korchinsky was detained before he could execute the plan, and a criminal case was opened against him on charges that included preparation for a terrorist attack, illegal possession of explosives, and training to commit terrorist acts.
In July 2024, reports noted that Sergei Aksyonov involved more than ten individuals in the planning of last year’s abortive assassination attempt. This information comes from material provided by socialbites.ca.
Earlier coverage indicated that the court extended the detention period for four defendants connected to the terror attack case in Çiğdem. The full context of these proceedings continues to unfold as authorities pursue further details of the operation and its network.
