Next Thursday, the Regional Court of Murcia will hear the first session of a case involving an attempted murder. The defendant, Jorge Iván CZ, is accused of attacking his ex-wife’s partner, Sergio, with a log and attempting to strangle him in Águilas while shouting insults at the victim, including a remark about being a “shitty priest.” Prosecutors seek a nine-year prison sentence and €849.81 in compensation to Sergio. During the confrontation, Sergio pleaded for his life as he struggled to breathe.

The incident occurred in January of this year at a home shared by Jorge Iván, his wife, and her new partner, Sergio. The defendant allegedly chose a night when the couple and their children would be away in Toledo attending a relative’s funeral, hoping to catch Sergio alone at the house.

sock attack

According to the court documents filed by the Public Ministry, the defendant reportedly said he had disconnected the power, waited for Sergio to finish a shower, and planned to lure him back into the house when the area would be dark. In his words, he would reappear so Sergio would be unable to defend himself. Barefoot and in white socks, the defendant allegedly hid behind the door of an unlit room and waited for Sergio to return, intending to ambush him.

The man who was targeted had been ordained as a priest several years earlier.

Sergio, upon entering, thought someone might have broken in when he noticed the laundry room door ajar. He illuminated the space with a flashlight and spotted the lone unlit room where the defendant’s socks were concealed behind the door. Startled, Sergio ran toward the living room, a reaction noted in the prosecution’s account.

According to the Public Ministry, Jorge Iván pursued him, grabbing him from behind and wrapping an arm around his neck with the intent to kill. Sergio could not draw enough breath as the assailant hissed a chilling line, declaring that Sergio had to be found. The victim escaped toward the house porch, only to be overtaken again in the same ambush and restrained by a renewed chokehold.

“I came to kill you”

In a low, pleading voice, Sergio urged him to consider his children and spare his life, but the accused responded with a stark assertion: “That’s what I came for.” The struggle left Sergio briefly unconscious, and he stumbled toward the property’s exit, reaching a clothesline where the attacker gripped him by the back of the neck and struck him a number of times. The assailant then dragged Sergio back toward the interior and assaulted him again by striking the neck with force, hoping to end the life and silence the victim permanently.

During the assault, the defendant grabbed a log from a nearby woodpile and began striking Sergio in the torso on the left side. Sergio covered his head with his hands, pleading for mercy while trying to protect himself. The victim repeatedly begged to be released and even asked the perpetrator to leave for Barcelona and to stop harassing him. The defendant allegedly retorted that Sergio would never be found again. He reportedly called him a “shitty priest,” a label connected to Sergio’s former vocation as a priest. The narrative notes that the victim’s relationship to the church was a visible thread throughout the confrontation.

The episode ended with the assailant allowing Sergio to re-enter the home, seize the car keys, and depart. Sergio drove toward Toledo, arriving at dawn after the violent attack left him seriously injured. He sought medical care and reported the incident to authorities. With the suspect’s full identity established, he was placed in temporary detention since February 1 of this year, and the trial is scheduled to commence on Thursday.
