Tea offers a range of benefits that vary with the type and preparation. Still, a gastroenterologist from SM-Clinic cautions that some people should watch their tea intake.

The clinician points out that tea contains tannins, natural compounds whose levels depend on the variety and brewing method. Tannins can bind with iron from foods, reducing iron absorption in the digestive tract.

Iron from plant sources is absorbed far less efficiently when tannins are present, compared with iron from animal products. For individuals with hidden iron deficiency or iron anemia, it is wise to monitor tea consumption, especially for those following a strict vegetarian diet. The recommendation given is to stay at or below three glasses per day for most people.

Another consideration is caffeine. Tea delivers caffeine, and high intake can raise feelings of anxiety, stress, and restlessness.

For anyone dealing with anxiety or depressive symptoms, limiting tea can be helpful. Research suggests that keeping caffeine under roughly 200 milligrams per day makes serious anxiety unlikely for most people.

Those with functional dyspepsia should also be cautious about tea. Excessive drinking, particularly on an empty stomach, may trigger nausea or stomach discomfort due to tannins that can irritate the stomach lining.

To counteract this effect, a few drops of milk in the tea or pairing the beverage with food is suggested by the expert.

Pregnant individuals should avoid excessive tea consumption because high caffeine levels may contribute to pregnancy complications. A daily caffeine limit near 200 milligrams is advised, and personalized medical advice is recommended because individual responses vary.

Some women choose herbal teas to avoid caffeine, but not all herbal options are safe during pregnancy. For instance, certain blends containing licorice are discouraged. The specialist emphasizes that anyone with questions should seek professional guidance.

Earlier research indicates herbal infusions can provide beneficial lipids, reinforcing the idea that tea and herbal drinks can play a positive role when consumed thoughtfully.
