Researchers from Hong Kong Baptist University found that spirulina supplements paired with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) aided weight loss in men. The findings were shared in a nutrition-focused publication.
Spirulina is a powder made from blue-green algae that people and animals can consume. Proponents say it may boost immune function, help regulate blood sugar, speed up metabolism, and support fat loss. To test these ideas, a study enrolled 44 obese adult men.
Participants were split into three groups. The first group followed a regular HIIT program for 84 days and took spirulina, six grams daily in two doses. The second group trained but did not take the supplement. The third group acted as the control. All participants underwent medical exams, provided blood samples, and completed a readiness questionnaire for physical activity.
When the study ended, the first group showed greater weight loss compared with the second and third groups. The combination of HIIT and spirulina also appeared to improve cholesterol and blood sugar metrics. Researchers noted spirulina’s glycemic effect, which comes from the way its fiber swells in the stomach and slows glucose absorption. The observed cholesterol benefits were attributed to linolenic acid, which can help limit fat buildup in the liver.
Plans for follow-up research include testing the approach in female participants to see if the effects hold across genders. Attribution: Hong Kong Baptist University researchers.
