July overnight stays in Spanish tourist accommodations outside hotels (apartments, campsites, rural tourism lodgings, and hostels) surpassed 21.7 million, marking a 1.7% rise from the previous July. This uptick stands in contrast to the -2.3% drop recorded in the same month last year.
Resident overnight stays fell by 0.1%, while non-resident stays rose by 3.7%, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) released on Friday. The average stay is around 4.6 nights per traveler.
Apartment stays declined by 1.3% in July. Resident stays dropped 5.1%, while non-residents increased 1.2%. The average length of stay fell 1.1%, to 5.3 nights per traveler. In July, occupancy reached 49.5% of the available units, up 4.4% from July 2023. Weekend occupancy stood at 53.2%, 6.2% higher.
Sixty-one point three percent of apartment overnight stays were by non-residents. By country, the United Kingdom was the leading source market, accounting for 30.9% of the total, according to INE data.
The Canary Islands were the preferred destination for apartment stays, with more than 2.2 million overnight stays, up 2.1% from July 2023. The Balearic Islands recorded the highest occupancy, at 86% of available apartments. Tourist zones saw Costa Blanca as the leading destination with over 1.1 million overnight stays. Mallorca posted the highest occupancy rate at 87.8%. The tourist spots with the most overnight stays were San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Arona, and Tías.
