The Spanish fitness sector has shown strong health and vitality, with data pointing to a robust 2022 outlook. The industry contributed around 3.3% of Spain’s GDP and employed a significant number of people, supporting tens of thousands of jobs in gyms, studios, and related services. Revenue reached approximately 2.1 billion euros, reflecting rising consumer interest in living healthier lives and a growing ecosystem of brands focused on fitness, nutrition, and wellbeing.
The pivotal year within this growth was 2021, when spending surged more than 24% year over year, rebounding beyond pre-pandemic levels. Although 2022 saw a softer pace, with revenue increasing about 5.3% compared to 2021, the sector maintained a clear upward trajectory and continued momentum across the market.
In global terms, North America leads in per capita fitness spend, followed by Asia-Pacific and Europe. Spain stands out as a leading market for physical activity, with recreational activities driving notable growth of 16.4% in 2022.
Spain and Italy compare closely
The European fitness market as a whole was projected to reach €28 billion in 2022, marking a 66% rise from the previous year. Within Europe, Spain registered activity levels and market size comparable to Italy, both reaching about €2.1 billion. Other major European contributors included England with roughly €5 billion, Germany around €4.9 billion, and France near €4 billion.
Across the country, 4,561 gyms served a national audience of approximately 5.4 million users. This represented a jump of more than half a million participants from the prior year and brought the industry close to pre-pandemic figures. The revenue growth of the sector was driven mainly by membership dues, creating a solid income stream for operators and service providers alike.
Pricing shifts and franchise growth
Price changes characterized the market the past years as many facilities adjusted fees to reflect value and service levels. The typical low-cost option rose from around €19 per month to roughly €30, while premium plans commonly started near €60. The franchise model continued to expand, with the franchise count surpassing 700 and total franchise revenue reaching around €192 million in 2022. CrossFit also became a standout, with more than 600 official affiliate centers operating nationwide.
The growth trend extended into the following year, with 2023 showing continued expansion of gym participation and a larger consumer base entering fitness facilities. About 16.5% of the population engaged in gym activities, up several percentage points from 2022. Younger age groups, particularly those aged 14 to 24, accounted for a substantial share of this participation, while engagement from the 54-and-older segment remained comparatively lower.
Forecasts for 2024 suggest ongoing growth in the fitness sector, albeit at a more moderate pace. An anticipated rise in subscription prices may accompany steadier subscriber numbers, while at-home workouts are expected to decline as more people return to in-person facilities and group activities, reinforcing the importance of accessible, well-equipped gyms in sustaining the momentum of Spain’s fitness economy.
