These results were shared during Sony’s quarterly financial briefing for the second fiscal quarter of the current year, which runs from April to March. The company outlined its ongoing performance amidst a market landscape that continues to favor next‑generation hardware and a robust library of software titles.

During the latest period under review, Sony reported sales of 3.3 million PS5 consoles, a number that matches the same quarter recorded a year earlier. This stability demonstrates a steady demand trajectory even as supply dynamics play a critical role in market availability in the United States, Canada, and beyond.

Analyzing the first quarter of 2022, the company sold 2.4 million PS5 units, topping the 2.3 million sold in the same quarter of the previous year. Those figures indicate stronger year‑to‑date performance in the present fiscal year compared with 2021, contributing to a narrative of resilience in a competitive hardware segment.

Nonetheless, Sony cautioned that achieving its full‑year target could be challenging if current trends persist. The company aims to reach 18 million PS5 units sold for the fiscal year, but as of now it has only reported 5.7 million units moved, highlighting the important balance between demand, production capacity, and distribution channels across North America.

Overall, the cumulative PS5 sales reflect a successful adoption of the latest Sony generation among gamers who sought higher performance and enhanced experiences. The broad market response has helped Sony build a solid track record for the new hardware line and maintain momentum as the ecosystem grows through hardware upgrades and an expanding software library.

In addition to hardware, Sony highlighted strong performance in the broader hardware sector, reporting a profit of 179,245 million yen in the second quarter of the current fiscal year, equivalent to roughly 1.2 billion euros, up from 160,635 million yen in the prior year. This improvement illustrates a positive mix of product categories and improved efficiency across the business.

Sales revenue from video games and software also rose, increasing from 343.03 billion yen in the second quarter of the previous year to 369.977 billion yen in the second quarter of the current year. The shift signals ongoing enthusiasm for both first‑party and third‑party title offerings in the PS5 era.

When examining the software segment, Sony noted that gamers have purchased a total of 62.5 million games across all supported platforms. Of these purchases, about 63 percent were digital downloads, reflecting strong digital adoption in North American markets where online storefronts and rapid delivery resonate with players. Sony’s own studios accounted for 6.7 million first‑party titles, underscoring the continued emphasis on internal game development as a driver of platform loyalty and sustained software revenue.
