Serbia is set to boost its military modernization efforts, with President Aleksandar Vučić signaling increased defense spending and the potential acquisition of advanced combat aircraft from France. Bloomberg has reported on these developments.

Historically, Serbia relied on Russian MiG-29 fighters. However, after February of the previous year, obtaining spare parts became nearly impossible, prompting a shift in strategy. Vučić emphasized that the challenge was not a reflection on Russia but a practical consequence of supply disruptions.

The Serbian leadership has made clear that the armed forces should be significantly strengthened. In recent statements, Vučić outlined plans to pursue a more capable and modern air and ground defense posture, reflecting a broader intent to enhance national security and regional stability.

Earlier remarks indicated that Serbia had placed orders for a third Pantsir air defense and missile system along with electronic warfare capabilities from Russia, although final procurement actions had not yet materialized. Vučić noted that a decade ago Belgrade operated a MiG-29 fleet that could take off, and today Serbia commands a portfolio of 14 modernized warplanes ready for service.

Following a review of the recent Fire Shield exercises, Vučić affirmed that talks with France would continue as Belgrade seeks to secure additional Dassault Rafale fighters. The discussions reflect Serbia’s intent to diversify its defense partnerships and strengthen its air defense and power projection capabilities in the near term.
