Overview of the Russian Toy Landscape and Public Opinion

A recent survey revealed that a majority of Russians, about 57 percent, prefer Soviet-era toys over contemporary ones. The study gathered input from 5.6 thousand participants. The findings point to a lasting appreciation for classic playthings among many families and individuals across the country. The results also highlight that traditional favorites include animal figures with gentle expressions, dolls with human-like features, wooden horses, construction sets, and a variety of board games. One respondent commented that the appeal goes beyond the familiar trio of Barbies, Kens, and bright, animal-faced toys, noting a broader range of cherished options.

In addition to nostalgia for older toys, the survey showed that 21 percent of respondents are drawn to new interactive toys, while 14 percent claim a preference for modern toys that are more aesthetically pleasing, vivid, and engaging than those from earlier eras. A smaller share, 4 percent, singled out Barbie as their top toy, with 3 percent opting for the “other” category. Those who chose other toys emphasized the value of construction sets, board games, and educational games as top choices for playtime and learning opportunities.

The discussion extended to concerns about how certain games can influence children. Pavel Pozhigailo, the first deputy chairman of a Public Chamber commission focusing on demography, family protection, and traditional family values, cautioned that some games may have negative effects on children’s psychology and behavior. He specifically mentioned that games like the Monopoly board game and certain puzzles could pose concerns for young players. This stance reflects ongoing debates about the potential impact of toys and games on child development.

Formerly, psychologists have weighed in on which toys may be unsuitable for children, emphasizing age-appropriate choices and the importance of safe, constructive play experiences. The overall takeaway is that toy selection remains a nuanced issue, balancing nostalgia, educational value, and assurance of healthy development for children.
