Overview of Russian Ski Holiday Spending and Resort Perceptions in 2024

In a recent survey summarized by socialbites.ca and based on a BestDoctor study, Russians show diverse patterns when planning and financing ski vacations. A clear majority, around 55 percent, report spending between 100 000 and 300 000 rubles per person for a ski trip. A substantial portion, roughly 41 percent, aims to limit expenses to under 50 000 rubles by booking in advance and prioritizing savings. These figures illustrate a split approach to ski travel between budget minded travelers and those prioritizing comfort and convenience in their chosen resorts.

Only a small share, about 4 percent, can allocate more than 300 000 rubles for a single ski holiday. These travelers tend to value advanced infrastructure and premium amenities, even if it means paying a premium. The willingness to invest in quality infrastructure reflects a broader expectation for reliable lifts, well maintained slopes, and high service standards that support an enjoyable experience on the slopes.

Security concerns also shape how Russians approach ski vacations. A considerable portion notes a readiness to purchase private insurance to cover potential injuries on the slopes, with about one in two participants indicating they carry such coverage. Alongside personal safety, there is a strong emphasis on protecting ski equipment. More than half of respondents express interest in insurance options that cover equipment failure or loss where available. These attitudes were shared by Mikhail Belyandinov, a co founder of the BestDoctor group, who underscored the importance of safety and protection for equipment during ski trips.

Attitudes toward infrastructure and comfort at domestic ski resorts reveal a nuanced picture. Close to half of respondents rate the current facilities positively while acknowledging room for improvement. A substantial minority, roughly one third, express complete satisfaction with infrastructure in Russian ski areas. However, there are negative views as well, with about 11 percent offering a critical assessment and a small portion of respondents expressing uncertainty when asked to judge the overall condition of facilities.

Infrastructure remains a key factor in resort selection for many travelers. More than a third of participants identify it as an important criterion when choosing a ski destination. Other influential considerations include the distance to the resort and ease of access by transportation, cited by about one third of respondents. Elevation changes and affordable airline fares also play a role, each noted by roughly 14 percent of respondents as important factors when evaluating options for a ski trip.

Looking at popular domestic destinations for active recreation in 2024, several resorts stand out. Rosa Khutor and Krasnaya Polyana together attract about a third of travelers, followed closely by Dombay and by Elbrus and Cheget. Other destinations such as Sheregesh and Arkhyz also draw interest, with about 14 percent of respondents selecting them. The Moscow region is another notable option, chosen by roughly 8 percent of respondents. These patterns reveal a mix of well known resort hubs and emerging spots that appeal to a broad range of skiers and snowboarders within Russia.

Overall assessments of service quality in domestic tourism indicate that Russians value reliable standards and clear indicators of well managed resorts. While many are satisfied with what is available, a notable portion sees opportunities for enhancement, particularly in the areas of resort infrastructure and the overall guest experience. The balance between safety, convenience, and value continues to shape how skiers plan their trips and which resorts earn a place on their itineraries.
