Since the start of 2022, Russia has recorded ten fires involving electric scooters. One person died and six others were injured as a result of these incidents, according to the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
The ministry confirmed that ten electric scooter fires have occurred. A total of one fatality and six injuries were reported, with no additional tragic outcomes in the most recent year, they noted.
The Ministry explained that the leading ignition risks arise from improper use, including damage to lithium-ion batteries that are part of these devices. Short circuits and overcharging are also cited as frequent triggers for fires involving scooters.
Officials emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines when using electric scooters.
Before operating an electric scooter, users should carefully review the manufacturer’s instructions, with particular attention to charging procedures and battery handling.
Storage safety is equally important. It is advised to keep scooters away from flammable materials and furniture. In the event of a fire, callers should promptly dial emergency numbers and notify the fire department.
In a fire, the ministry recommends attempting to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher if available. If a extinguisher is not on hand, smothering the fire with a blanket can help limit oxygen exposure. If a fire occurs outdoors, covering it with sand or earth is advised. If the fire cannot be detected by the user, nearby individuals should move to a safe distance and wait for responders.
Former Deputy Head of the Moscow Traffic Police Department, Evgeny Loginovsky, suggested that schools in the capital might consider offering electric scooter safety lessons to students and families.
