What Protective Income is and who it helps
Protective Income is an economic benefit designed to support families with children in Spain. Its purpose is to ease the financial burden of parenthood, especially for households with limited income or in vulnerable situations. This support sits within social protection policies and aims to safeguard the well being of children and adolescents across the country.
Parental Income targets families residing in Spain that meet specific economic and social criteria. It is important to note that both Spanish citizens and legal residents can access this aid as long as the established requirements are met.
This assistance also serves families with disabilities. For children aged 0 to 3 years there is a monthly payment of 100 euros per eligible child within this age group.
What you need to claim Parenting Income
To access Parenting Income, an applicant must be in one of the following situations:
- Mothers receiving unemployment benefits may apply for this benefit, with or without contributions.
- Part-time or full-time working mothers can apply if they have been enrolled in Social Security or a mutual insurance company for at least 30 days before claiming the benefit.
- Single parent families can also qualify, for example when the other parent has been hospitalized due to illness for more than a year, is in prison, or custody is held by only one parent.
- Rights of gay parents are recognized, and families with same-sex parents are entitled to this benefit.
Can parents apply for Parental Income?
A common question concerns whether parents can request this monthly aid of 100 euros. The answer is yes, but eligibility is limited to certain circumstances. While the benefit is aimed at mothers in many cases, fathers or guardians may also claim it under specific conditions. In practice, the Tax Office notes that a father or guardian is eligible in cases such as the death of the mother or when custody is held entirely by the father or guardian. These scenarios must align with the general rules, including that the child is not older than three years and that the father is either unemployed, registered with Social Security, or has been registered for a minimum of 30 days after birth.
In all circumstances, the child’s age limit and the claimant’s employment or registration status must be met to receive the benefit.
