The teenager sought refuge at home after escaping the institute, following an incident in which another teenager was stabbed in the back. A person who witnessed the event described a prior dispute that had escalated at the end of the previous year, which had resulted in two students being expelled from the center. Cristóbal Casado, the Águilas Member of Parliament for Citizen Security, characterized the boy as aggressive and frequently truant, with police records in the city mentioned in passing by local officials.
The youth will be placed in the custody of the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office due to his age. He is expected to face possible charges related to injuries.
The events unfolded around 9:30 in the morning. Emergency services received multiple calls reporting a minor in urgent need of medical attention following a stabbing by another young person. The incident occurred at Alfonso Escámez Secondary Education Institute, a coastal town location in Águilas. There, a stabbing in a classroom was confirmed by authorities.
Initial accounts indicate that one of the minors attacked the other from behind, after which the assailant fled the scene. An ambulance was dispatched to provide treatment for the injured student. Fortunately, medical staff indicated that the blade did not strike vital areas and that the student’s life was not in immediate danger. The injured person did not lose consciousness and was transported by ambulance to the Rafael Méndez Hospital in Lorca, then subsequently to the Virgen de Murcia Arrixaca hospital for further care.
During class change
Education Minister Mabel Campuzano contacted the director of IES Columbine on Monday morning. She described the protocol as having been followed precisely, noting that 112 was alerted. The ministry stated that center activities continued without interruption.
The department has pledged all available resources to support the institute. Psychologists, counselors, and the Ministry’s coexistence team will visit the center to assist students and staff on Tuesday.
The ministry indicated that the stabbing occurred during the transition between the first and second bell of the class and stemmed from a fight elsewhere on the premises. Inside the classroom, one student attacked another with a knife from behind.
The focus remains on ensuring that this aggression does not worsen the situation. Authorities expressed concern about the potential consequences and stressed the importance of swift, careful action to prevent further harm.
In addition to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office action, an internal inquiry will be opened by the school administration to review the incident. As expected, the young person faced removal from the school environment due to the behavior displayed in the episode witnessed by IES staff.
The IES Aquiline issued a statement acknowledging that while the stabbing was a timely event, the entire educational community was appalled by the violence that occurred.
Violence in educational centers within the Murcia region is not new. Earlier this year, a 13-year-old student at Monteagudo School in Murcia stabbed a teacher and was transferred to a health center, though the teacher’s condition was not reported as serious at that time. Local authorities and school officials continue to review safety protocols and support systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
