A pension holds major importance for many seniors, often serving as the primary means to cover living costs. The amount a retiree receives depends on defined parameters and can be adjusted by Social Security at any time.
In order to collect a minimum pension, the base is set at 783.10 euros, with a minimum contribution period of at least 15 years. From there, additional factors come into play, such as dependent family members or a disability status, which elevate the benefit. The pension grows as a percentage and, to receive the maximum monthly pension of 3,000 euros, a person must have worked for 36 years and 6 months.
Starting in 2024, a new retirement framework began expanding benefits, increasing subsidies in most scenarios. This reform is scheduled to unfold over three years and aims to reach its full impact by 2027.

What will happen now?
From 2024 through 2027, pension values will be adjusted based on 2024 poverty-line figures for a single-person household. The adjustment seeks to improve how elderly residents benefit from this income stream. The reform also introduces a gender gap supplement that adds 10% above the CPI reference for eligible pensions, with notable increases projected for 2026. The annual gross adjustment targets around 16,511 euros, reflecting gradual increases over the period.
The government is considering further boosts to specific pensions, including widow’s pensions, with increments ranging from 17% to 30%. The plan aims to raise these payments gradually from 2024 through 2027, with monthly increases up to 40 euros in some cases. Additional subsidies for orphans and disabled individuals are also on the table, intended to lift overall income stability for vulnerable groups.
