Alicante-based TM Grupo Inmobiliario has teamed with Cruz y Roja and the Hippocampus Association to launch a nationwide program named “Responsible Mediterranean.” The initiative aims to safeguard the Mediterranean and its biodiversity, spanning the Mediterranean Arc over the next two years. It seeks to mobilize more than 2,500 participants through a mix of research, awareness, and action activities designed to protect coastal ecosystems and marine life.

During the initial phase, beach and sea waste will be tracked following the protocol set by the Ministry of Ecological Transformation. As part of this effort, nearly a hundred dives will be conducted to document marine species along the Mediterranean Arc. Results from these activities will be shared at a forthcoming event that will review the current conditions and offer practical recommendations to reduce litter, protect shorelines, and safeguard the surrounding marine habitats.

Awareness

Efforts to inform the public, including children, young people, and civil society at large, will focus on the issue of marine litter, the importance of oceans, and their protection, along with recycling, responsible consumption, and circular economy principles.

Based on the event outcomes, educational materials will be prepared, and days featuring underwater excursions will be organized to teach attendees about the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean.

Action and participation

The final phase will center on organizing an array of waste collection, separation, and recycling actions across beaches along the Mediterranean Arc, with the collaboration of TM, Red Cross, and Hippocampus groups.

Additionally, the project includes a major lead cleanup operation associated with the Plumbum initiative, a pioneering effort to remove lead from the seabed.

The project’s signing ceremony took place on October 17 at 12:30 at the Red Cross headquarters in Madrid, with representatives from the three partner institutions present.

Ángeles Serna, president of TM Grupo Inmobiliario, confirmed that the agreement marks a milestone for one of the most significant environmental undertakings within the Corporate Responsibility Director Plan. “Protecting the sea and its biodiversity has been highlighted as a top priority for our stakeholders, and we are committed to supporting the Red Cross and Hippocampus in developing this ambitious project to defend the Mediterranean,” he stated.

Red Cross president María del Mar Pageo expressed gratitude for TM Real Estate Group’s support through financial donations during humanitarian emergencies and for the cooperation now starting with this project. “Collaboration with socially responsible companies like TM Real Estate Group is essential for the Red Cross to advance its mission and to extend our intervention impact. This project strengthens the Red Cross’s environmental work in support of sustainable development goals.”

José Luis Alcaide, president of Hippocampus, added: “Protecting the seas and their biodiversity is a challenge that society must meet by raising awareness, educating, and acting. Success hinges on joining forces. Today TM, Cruz Roja, and Hippocampus will work together to amplify our reach across all initiatives, bringing our experience and determination to bear.”
