More than 300,000 people signed up for the Renfe complimentary commuter, Rodalí, and medium-distance transport cards announced by the government for the last quarter of the year. The goal behind the measure is to offset the effects of inflation and rising fuel prices, making daily travel more affordable for families and workers who rely on rail services.
The announcement came from the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda at a press conference following a Council of Ministers session. The minister stressed that the program stands to benefit households, workers, and students, and it is expected to reduce private car use, thereby delivering environmental gains in addition to financial relief.
From this Wednesday onward, train tickets can be purchased once applicants have registered on the public railway company’s website. During the duration of the program, which runs from September 1 to December 31, tickets will be available on Renfe’s website, through the Renfe app, at ticket offices, or at self-service machines.
According to the minister, a couple with two children living on the outskirts of Madrid could save substantial amounts between September and December. Similar savings are projected in other major cities, with the potential for significant reductions in travel costs in Barcelona, Seville, and Valencia during the four months the plan remains in effect.
As part of the initiative, the minister also challenged political opponents to consider how they will vote on these measures, which are designed to ease the financial strain on families. The emphasis was placed on engaging and supporting workers and families who depend on public transport for daily life and commutes.
Returning travelers
The program includes 100 percent bonuses aimed at frequent travelers who make at least 16 trips during the four-month window. This aspect is defined by the Royal Decree Act, whose ratification will be a matter for the Congress of Deputies to decide in the coming days.
In addition, the Avant coupons and AVE services section offers travel time reductions of less than 100 minutes at a 50 percent discount. These benefits become available on September 1 and are designed to streamline travel for regular users who switch to discounted options during peak periods.
To accelerate the process of subscribing, Renfe advises travelers to pre-register via mobile apps or the official website. However, those who have not yet registered may still purchase tickets at Renfe sales offices or self-service machines located at Renfe stations by presenting their NIF, NIE, or passport. Subscriptions are personal and non-transferable, reinforcing the need for proper identification during purchase and use.
Although the subscription itself is free, a refundable deposit is required. The deposit amounts are set at 10 euros for each Cercanías and Rodalies core service and 20 euros for each Conventional Media Distancia service. When paying by card, the deposit is automatically refunded after the program’s term ends, provided that the required 16 trips during the four-month period have been completed as specified.
