Renfe has announced new details about free Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia passes, with the first day already seeing a large uptake. On the inaugural day, these complimentary passes allow travel until April 30, offering users a no-cost option on several regional services. Renfe confirmed to Europa Press that the rollout is proceeding normally, following government approval to extend the measure that has been in place since September 2022. The passes are valid for the duration of the year in four-month blocks, but a fresh subscription is required for each period. A refundable 10 euro deposit applies, with refunds issued after more than 16 trips in a period for most routes, or 20 euros for Media Distancia travels. These terms help manage demand and encourage fair use across the network.

To speed up pass delivery and minimize waits, Renfe recommends buying passes via the Renfe Cercanías app, or through the Renfe website for Media Distancia and Avant passes. This guidance comes as part of ongoing efforts to streamline access and reduce friction for daily commuters and occasional travelers alike.

The 50 percent discount on Avant services (High Speed and Medium Distance) has also been extended and will apply to other high-speed routes designated as Public Service Obligations (PSO). This extension supports travelers seeking faster connections while preserving affordability across key corridors.

Free Media Distancia passes can be used on Avant services along the Madrid to Salamanca corridor, as well as on selected high-performance lines such as A Coruña to Ourense and Murcia to Alicante. For proximity lines including Palma del Río to Villa del Río, Illescas to Fuenlabrada, Málaga to El Chorro to Caminito del Rey, Murcia to Cartagena, and Medina del Campo to Valladolid to Palencia, the terms in force through 2024 require a 10 euro Cercanías deposit for tickets.

Preventing irregular use

In response to issues last year where some Media Distancia passes were underutilized or resulted in empty seats, Renfe strengthened its reservation safeguards. The company extended the window to formalize or cancel reservations to one hour, rather than the previous 10 minutes, for traditional and Medium Distance routes. This measure aims to ensure space is available for those who need it and to curb waste.

Travelers who fail to use their allocated space should cancel at least 60 minutes in advance, especially during transitions. If a traveler cancels fewer than three times without meeting the required notice, they may lose the right to purchase new season tickets for the following 30 days.

Previously, Renfe warned travelers about potential consequences when first informed of cancellations without adequate notice. The company is also preparing additional steps for Avant trains on Medium Distance routes, set to take effect on March 1, 2024, with further announcements forthcoming on the lines where these services operate.

Awareness campaign

To promote proper use of the subsidy titles, Renfe plans a citizen awareness campaign beginning in the second week of January. The message emphasizes that misusing passes harms other travelers who rely on affordable access. Random checks on Media Distancia and Avant services will monitor ticket use, and non-compliance will trigger fraud prevention measures defined for these services.
