Renfe expands and adjusts Avant subscriptions amid changing work patterns in Spain
Renfe, a publicly traded company under the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, has announced another expansion of its Avant subscription program. In response to the ongoing shift toward remote work, the company has extended termination dates for Avant passes, now set through June 30, 2023. This measure reflects Renfe’s commitment to adapting its rail services to the evolving needs of daily commuters and students alike. The decision was confirmed by the commission that oversees the contract between the General State Administration and Renfe for the provision of rail passenger transport services under Public Service Obligations (PSO).
Renfe currently offers three Avant subscription options: Plus 10 Card, Plus 10 Student Card, and Plus Card. These products target individuals who travel frequently on high‑speed rail lines, typically workers and students who rely on fast, reliable rail service to commute to work or school. The Avants are designed to provide predictable costs and convenient access for regular travelers, reinforcing rail as a viable alternative to other modes of transport.
The original validity periods for these subscriptions were eight days for the Plus 10 Card, ten days for the Plus 10 Student Card, and thirty days for the Plus Card. Those periods were temporarily extended to twenty days for the first two options and sixty days for the Plus Card to encourage continued use of medium‑haul rail services and to support a broader shift away from less sustainable travel options. The Avant program remains linked to services that operate under the PSO framework, highlighting rail travel as a key component of Spain’s public transport strategy.
In practice, this expansion marked a response to the demand for flexibility and resilience in travel planning. The adjustments acknowledged that remote work arrangements can affect daily travel needs, allowing subscribers to stretch the validity of their passes and to choose rail travel when it suits their schedules. This approach aligns with the broader objective of maintaining high levels of ridership while reducing congestion and emissions associated with more polluting transport modes.
Historically, the Avant initiative first gained broader eligibility during the COVID‑19 period, when authorities sought to accommodate passengers who might otherwise be steered toward alternative modes of transport if travel options were too constrained. Since then, the program has undergone several renewals in response to user demand, with the most recent extension completed in June 2022. The ministry notes that expansions like these can help attract new users and provide practical flexibility for current subscribers, particularly in contexts where remote work influences travel demand patterns.
In official communications, the ministry emphasized that extending the Avant options supports continued accessibility to high‑speed rail for everyday use and offers greater flexibility for commuters who balance work, study, and personal commitments. The move reflects a policy aim to keep rail transport competitive, convenient, and attractive for people across Spain, while also supporting broader environmental and mobility objectives.
