Reform, a comprehensive energy infrastructure company, has announced a strategic alliance with inercho to advance a major biomethane initiative in Spain. The collaboration targets the development of ten biomethane plants across several Aragonese communities, backed by a planned investment that could reach 150 million euros, as outlined in a recent press release.
The agreement covers the full lifecycle of the facilities, including design, permitting, development, construction, and commissioning. The project is expected to generate significant local employment, with about 300 direct jobs and around 2,000 indirect positions created to support operations and supply chains.
By the end of 2023, the first five biomethane plants are scheduled to complete the construction phase ahead of administrative finalizations and will be located in autonomous regions such as Andalusia, Aragon, and Castilla y Leon. These facilities are projected to produce up to 250 GWh of biomethane annually, enabling sustainable waste management for approximately 750,000 tonnes of waste and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 45,750 tonnes per year.
The project aligns with Spain’s Biogas Roadmap, the Integrated Strategic Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), currently undergoing revision, and the REPowerEU initiative. This biomethane development not only supports decarbonization goals but also aims to spur rural transformation, contribute to economic recovery, address demographic challenges, and improve waste handling practices across the country.
According to the most recent Sedigas assessment, Spain holds a potential biomethane yield of approximately 163 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually. This figure represents about 45 percent of the nation’s natural gas demand and highlights the capacity of biomethane to play a crucial role in the country’s energy mix while supporting regional development in rural areas.
