Recount of a Cartagena Surgical Case and Subsequent Investigations

Sara Gómez passed away on New Year’s Eve after undergoing plastic surgery in Cartagena, where she received a tummy tuck and liposuction in a single procedure. This happened in January 2021, less than a year before the death that sparked the investigation. During the proceedings at Cartagena Court, the surgeon who operated on her spoke about the result, saying she was unhappy with how things turned out and that she had wanted another procedure. The surgeon made clear he did not perform the reoperation himself because he did not want to proceed under those circumstances.

Sara Gómez’s family lawyer explained to the press that the first surgeon advised waiting at least a year before attempting any reoperation. He also noted that the patient showed signs of improvement, yet the conversation about further surgery continued. A second doctor, Dr. Javier Alejandro MDC, is now under investigation for alleged responsibility for Gómez’s death. The operation was reportedly conducted in a rented room at a facilities location in Cartagena.

“It was more than simply the damage from rushing into a reoperation”

A urologist from Santa Lucía who attended to the patient cautioned against any further surgery, warning that the potential damage could exceed expectations. In response to questions from the defense, Dr. Javier Alejandro MDC stated that Gómez’s health had improved from December 2 to December 3, but she entered hypovolemic shock on December 2, a life-threatening condition caused by significant blood loss that the heart could not compensate for.

Urologist Testimony

The urologist later confirmed that Gómez was hemodynamically stable on December 3. People close to the case discussed this possibility, and there is confusion about why additional treatment was not pursued at that time in Santa Lucía.

Both Evaristo Llanos and Pablo Martínez, the accused doctor’s legal representatives, confirmed that the judge indicated the investigation would soon be closed, pending forensic reports expected to arrive in January, marking the start of the final phase of the inquiry.

Allegations of Harassment

When asked about the defendant’s condition, Martínez described his client as calm and trusting in justice, while also noting the social and professional harassment suffered by the family and friends of Gómez. The lawyers for Sara Gómez have already faced accusations in court related to their conduct.

Family members, expressing sympathy for Martínez, learned that Dr. Javier Alejandro MDC was working at a hospital in Andalusia and began to contact the facility with inquiries and concerns. In response to the mounting attention, the doctor chose to pursue legal action against those subjected to unfounded criticisms.
