Greek social democrat Eva Kaili faces charges alongside three others of membership in a criminal organization, corruption, and money laundering linked to a Belgian criminal network. The scandal, known as Qatargate, alleged a bribery scheme involving Qatar aimed at swaying the European Parliament’s political and economic decisions. Kaili stepped down from one of the 14 vice presidents’ roles in the European Parliament on Tuesday as the case unfolded. The plenary session approved a resolution in response to the scandal with broad support, signaling the assembly’s insistence that integrity must be the Parliament’s top priority.
