Environmental awareness has long characterized Charles III, who spent a lifetime publicizing concerns about the degradation of nature. From adolescence, the new king has consistently championed pro-environment causes. This is not a late-life shift but a longstanding commitment. At the age of 22, in February 1970, Charles delivered his first speech on the environment, signaling a deep-seated commitment to the natural world far before it became a mainstream topic. He warned about the potential dangers of viruses spreading and the impact of plastic waste on ecosystems—a concern that was hardly discussed by the wider public at the time, more than five decades ago.
“What we do to the ocean and nature, we ultimately do to ourselves.” This warning was uttered during a recent official visit to Palau, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the consequences of inaction. During the UK heat waves this summer, he emphasized that commitments to net zero emissions have never been more important as record temperatures threaten both climate stability and public health across Europe. He has also stated that the climate crisis is a genuine emergency that demands urgent action.
Yet the emphasis is not solely on words. Charles has translated his concerns into action. In 2019, he launched the Sustainable Markets Initiative, a plan aimed at placing nature, people, and the planet at the center of global value creation. He has engaged with a broad network of environmental organizations and recently brought Commonwealth leaders together for roundtables focused on accelerating climate action and scaling up sustainable investments.
The monarch has received numerous environmental honors, including recognition as a Global Environment Citizen in 2007 from Harvard University and earlier accolades from the Global Environment Prize conferred by a former US Vice President. These acknowledgments, however, have not been without criticism. Some British environmentalists noted the environmental cost of international travel, questioning the sustainability of flying in a large aircraft as part of official duties.

“Small farmers have become a buffer against economic uncertainty in food production,” he wrote. “Those who bear all the risks and have the smallest share of the benefits.”
In discussions about farming, he advocated for organic methods and highlighted the problem of waste. He recalled that 9,000 million people could be fed through sustainable practices, while warning against wasting about 40% of what is produced, a figure supported by UN estimates. He pointed out the enormous losses tied to waste, noting that the equivalent of billions could fund more than development aid if redirected wisely.
The background shows a leader whose environmental stance is deeply rooted in early beliefs. While the king must avoid political debate and does not hold executive power, his influence and public platform offer a powerful channel for environmental advocacy that many see as a vehicle to sustain ongoing awareness and action on planetary health.
