The latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics show that Spanish residents accounted for 6.75 million overnight stays, up 20.6% from the previous year, while non-residents contributed 6.73 million, climbing by 279.2%. The data indicates strong cross-border interest in Spanish destinations and a sustained preference for flexible, non-hotel accommodations.
The average stay in these establishments stood at 3.9 nights, underscoring longer visits and greater urban-to-rural dispersion as travelers explore multiple locations during trips.
tourist apartments
Overnight stays in touristic apartments rose by 132.7% in June, though still below May where growth reached 254.5% versus the same period last year. Domestic travelers spent 24.1% more nights in apartments, while non-residents increased their nights by 355%. The average length of stay rose by 15.9% from June 2021, reaching 4.9 nights per traveler. In June, 38.1% of the available apartment listings were occupied, an occupancy rise of 92.5% compared with June 2021. Over the month, foreign visitors accounted for 64.2% of total overnight stays, with the United Kingdom contributing more than 1.5 million nights and Germany adding 517,079 nights. The Canary Islands emerged as the most popular destination for renting apartments in June, recording over 1.7 million overnight stays and a 223.4% year-on-year increase, while Madrid posted the highest regional occupancy rate at 81.7% of offered units.

Overnight stays in campsites increased year over year by 42.4%, with growth distributed between residents and non-residents. Residents rose 11.9% and non-residents surged by 181.5%. In June, 41.8% of the proposed plots were occupied, a 21.1% gain over June 2021, and weekend occupancy reached 48%, up 18.3% from the previous year. These shifts reflect a continued preference for outdoor, flexible lodging options among both locals and tourists.
Rural tourism is growing
Overnight stays in rural tourism accommodations climbed 28.8% in June, supported by a 9.2% rise in resident stays and a substantial 107.7% jump in non-resident stays. Across the month, 20.1% of rural lodging was occupied, an increase of 20% compared with June 2021. By region, the Balearic Islands stood out with 198,135 overnight stays, up 61.1%, and the island reported the highest occupancy rate at 64.6%.

Hostels saw 837,135 overnight stays in June, up 281.6% from the previous year. Residents grew by 174.7% and non-residents by 638.7%. For pricing context, the Tourist Apartment Price Index (IPAP) rose 11.7% in June from the same month in 2021, the Campsite Price Index (IPAC) increased by 5.4%, and Rural Tourism Prices (IPTR) rose by 7.1% in the same period.
