The wife was 19 years old and a student at the Sverdlovsk Regional Pharmaceutical College. A friend of the deceased recalled that the man had told people he planned to divorce Svetlana and that the couple had been together for about a year, during which they welcomed a son. The relationship, according to that friend, was exceedingly strained.

He recalled that she did not voice conflicts with Nikita and that she believed everything was fine. Svetlana’s father mentioned a late-July conversation in which Svetlana spoke about a dispute with her husband. He admitted that he did not approve of the choice to stay in the relationship and suspected that a formal separation might have already occurred. When Svetlana left to give birth in Nizhny Tagil in February, she stopped answering calls, and her father noted that financial hardship was pervasive, with ongoing employment instability affecting the family. He added that Svetlana had considered moving with her family to Verkhnyaya Salda to ease the situation, and that Nikita contributed financially even when his own job prospects were uncertain. The father described his daughter as the light of his life, the embodiment of kindness and warmth.
