No phone. Broke. With nothing. For the past fifteen days, Kathy’s family has been glued to the phone. He searches but cannot find it. The warning is maximum: Her name is Katherine Vidondo, she is 35 years old and missing since November 30. That day, she escaped from Sagrat Cor hospital in Martorell, Barcelona, taking advantage of one of the center’s routine excursions. After fifteen days of intense searching, there has been no word. “We are very afraid,” her mother Carmen tells CASO ABIERTO, the events and research portal of Prensa Ibérica. “Kathy has lived with chronic mental illness for years, and we fear something grave may have happened.”
Another patient left
The alert sounded when the day’s break ended on the 30th. The recaptured routine lasts an hour, happens daily, and patients like Kathy usually leave the center under close monitoring. When the excursion ended, alarms indicated Kathy was not there. (Attribution: ongoing reporting by local media and family observers)
As this outlet learned, the census showed that another patient was also missing, a boy who later returned after two days. He arrived with the impression that Kathy had gone elsewhere. They apparently boarded the same bus, reached Martorell station together, and then separated. That other patient confirmed that each person follows their own path.
“We are very afraid, my daughter’s illness pushes her toward marginal places and environments,” her mother explains.
“My daughter did not come back to the hospital and there was no sign of her. The risk is high, we are very worried,” Carmen adds. Kathy’s illness, she notes, “allows people to approach marginal areas where drugs circulate.” This is not merely desperation; she recalls a similar incident from 2015 when her daughter disappeared and was found some days later on the streets of Barcelona. She had lost weight, and her mother’s concerns about her medical condition and safety were not addressed quickly enough. There is a possibility she wandered into a marginal neighborhood of Barcelona just as before. She is highly social and at the same time vulnerable, capable of forming complicated friendships. She can be anywhere, wandering, and trusting too easily.
On the family album, another photo shows Kathy; the SOS Missing Persons poster with the warning is visible on the right. OPEN STATE.
“Unattended”
Fifteen days in, the investigation has not progressed. It is known she took advantage of a day off to escape. “They allowed them out for an hour with monitors in the unit where my daughter stayed. They went to the cafeteria at the hospital’s entrance. By day thirty, all twenty patients had done so. They didn’t notice her absence until she re-entered the unit.” Carmen doesn’t want to blame individuals, but she questions the safety measures and wishes for better safeguards. “All I want is to find my daughter,” she says, yet the thought that this could have been prevented lingers.
When she raised concerns with local police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, the response was that there wasn’t much they could do about internal hospital leaks. The working theory remains voluntary disappearance, but Carmen insists this is not a voluntary march. “She’s a sick person, she’s in danger of disappearing and she’s at high risk.” Kathy is not on medication, heightening the concern. The family fears what might happen next, hoping for a breakthrough soon.
Open inquiry continues. No clear lead is found. Mossos d’Esquadra persist in collecting data. Carmen suspects a plan possibly involving a friend. In her private search, she has gathered information from three people and handed the contacts to the police, but there is no confirmation yet. The photo has been shared widely on social networks. SOS Lost is collecting clues and possible observations. Some searches have taken place, but none confirmed. Kathy could be anywhere. If anyone has information, the family asks for help to locate her.
Kathy is described as sociable and easy to befriend, standing about 1.60 meters tall, weighing around 95 kilograms, with a solid build and a youthful appearance for her age. She has long, wavy brown hair and brown eyes. On the day she disappeared, she was wearing black jeans, a gray sweatshirt, and black sneakers, with no jacket as the weather turned cold.
