In Madrid this Thursday, Netflix discussed upcoming releases across series, films, documentaries, and reality shows for 2024. The platform highlighted two flagship projects in development: a modern adaptation of the beloved 1970s film My Beloved Woman, produced by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, and a documentary series featuring the Javis and Baroness Thyssen, Carmen Cervera. A first still from the ensemble project Superstar was also shown, a fictional series by Los Javis about the life and career of the enigmatic Tamara, who would later be renamed Yurena.

Baroness Thyssen graced the event to introduce the documentary series Things I Never Explain, expressing her excitement about the project while noting she would not reveal unpublished details to keep viewers surprised. The documentary, a Komodo Studio production known for I’m Georgina, traces Thyssen’s life in clear, personal terms. She shared that Netflix is a source of happiness for her and hinted at forthcoming revelations.

The other major project is a faithful adaptation of the 1972 film My Beloved Woman, produced by Los Javis rather than a remake. The film, originally starring José Luis López Vázquez, is celebrated for its Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Javier Ambrossi noted that times have changed and it is time to revisit a story about gender identity and love, focusing on a man who dresses as a woman and works as a tailor. He emphasized the challenge of updating the narrative without losing the core essence that has defined the title across generations. Javier Calvo commented on the 1970s lens on gender, then paused, leaving the room to speculate about the project’s broader ambitions.

Yurena universe

The initial visual from Los Javis debuted at the event, introducing Superstar, a project by Nacho Vigalondo. The series will unfold Yurena’s artistic beginnings and explore her personality, along with family members who shape her world. The cast features Ingrid García-Jonsson as a controversial artist, Natalia de Molina, Loly Álvarez, Secun De La Rosa, Leonardo Dantes, Pepón Nieto, Tony Genil, Carlos Areces, Paco Porras, Julian Villagran, Harlequin, and Rocio Ibáñez as Tamara’s mother Margarita Seisdedos, among others, painting a vivid picture of a provocative, intertwined universe.

The event included playful moments with fans and colleagues. Participants from Sálvame mingled in the cloakroom and at the souvenir table, while Kiko Hernandez coordinated the guest list. The platform announced the second episode of the reality program featuring several Sálvame personalities, premiering Thursday at 21:00. Additional projects planned for 2024 were teased but not fully disclosed during the event.

Dated series

The lineup for 2024 includes a robust slate of returning and new fiction. The second season of several titles is anticipated, with a mix of premieres and renewals across months. Specific titles include Alpha Males returning on February 9, a third season renewal for Gentlemen, and new installments for Iron Hand, The Size 3 Problem, and the Asunta case in spring. Bridgertosn enters its first part on May 16 and concludes on June 13. Other spring releases include Clans, and Elite’s final season arrives in the summer. Breathe returns in the latter half of 2024, while Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez returns in autumn. Additional undated projects include One Hundred Years of Solitude and Attack on the Central Bank in the year’s second half. The roster also mentions Black Doves and Eternal for 2024, with a new season of Squid Game and Last Night in Tremor slated for later in the year.

Aitana’s film

Among the year’s film releases, a wave of titles is planned, including Wall to Wall, a remake of the French film starring Aitana. Other titles include Senna and Black Doves on April 19, the third and final film of a trilogy, Little Girl, Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez, and Álex de la Iglesia’s new feature 1992. Additional titles include Rebel Moon Part 2: The Trailblazer, Atlas, Champion, Hollywood Super Detective: Axel F, Hole 2, and Back in Action.

Beyond the Baroness’s documentary series and other documentaries announced for the year, Netflix will also present (P)Icarus: Little Nicholas, a look at Netflix’s coverage of Rafa Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, La Liga 24, a third season of I Am Georgina, and a documentary titled UniverXO Dabiz about media chief Dabiz Muñoz slated for the second half of 2024.
