Naturgy is set to play a leading role in expanding renewable gases in Spain. The energy company has launched a strategy to pioneer the production and distribution of biomethane, a form of biogas produced from recycling organic waste, within the Spanish market.

The group, the largest gas company in Spain and the third largest electricity company, currently operates two biomethane production plants and is advancing more than 50 projects at various stages of development. There are six production facilities connected to a distribution network exceeding 57,000 kilometers, and the plan is to add new facilities to surpass sixty in the medium term.

Naturgy has also initiated a strategy to promote renewable gases in homes. Through its distribution arm Nedgia, the company has already signed three alliances with property developers. These partnerships aim to connect new housing projects to the network to enable biomethane use and to equip homes with appliances compatible with renewable gas.

In recent months, Naturgy has closed agreements with Aedas Homes and Habitat Inmobiliaria, and has now added a third alliance with Hercesa. The objective is to bring biomethane to the end consumer. With new guarantees of origin similar to those already available for renewable electricity, each megawatt hour of 100 percent renewable gas provides a guarantee of origin that details where, when, and how the gas was produced.

Biomethane is a form of biogas produced by breaking down agricultural, livestock, and wastewater wastes. It is cleaned to be compatible with existing natural gas and can be blended with a large portion of domestic and industrial gas supplies. It also fits into existing gas networks. The Spanish gas sector emphasizes that biomethane is local energy production with a strong industrial impact, supports a circular economy, and helps decarbonization by reusing organic waste.
