Mossos d’Esquadra officers are searching for a man suspected of killing his five-year-old son and seriously injuring his wife at a residence in Bellcaire d’Empordà, Girona, in the early hours of this morning. Investigators say the attacker used a knife, first targeting the boy and then turning his violence on the mother, who survived the initial assault but sustained serious injuries.
The wife, 30, remains in critical condition at the Trueta Hospital in Girona, though she is out of immediate danger. She managed to escape the attack despite her wounds and alerted a neighbor who immediately contacted the police. The Mossos d’Esquadra received the report shortly after five o clock on Wednesday morning.
Alongside police units, a rescue ambulance was dispatched to the home on Ter Vell street to assist the victim. Despite the rapid medical response, medical staff could not save the life of the child, who was gravely wounded by the stabbing.
Following the incident, the suspect fled the scene, prompting an extensive search operation by law enforcement. Authorities are treating this case as a possible act of gender-based violence, given the attacker’s intent to harm the partner alongside the fatal assault on the child.
This incident marks the second case of violence against women in Catalonia within two days. On Monday, another man killed and dismembered his ex-partner in Amposta. The suspect was detained shortly afterward by local police and is expected to be presented before judicial authorities on Wednesday.
