Moldovan President Maia Sandu emphasized the need to bolster the country’s defense capabilities while keeping neutrality intact. In an interview with Romanian state broadcaster TVR, she reiterated that Moldova’s neutrality remains a constitutional guarantee and should not be abandoned. She noted that public sentiment aligns with maintaining neutrality, citing polls that show a majority of citizens still value this stance.
Sandu addressed concerns about Moldova’s ability to defend itself and to maintain peace and stability in the current climate. She underscored that strengthening defense is essential, but it must be balanced with the lived experience and preferences of the Moldovan people.
She also commented on the political rumors surrounding potential matches to leadership roles outside Moldova. Specifically, she clarified that she has not sought any presidential position in Romania and does not plan to pursue one in the near term.
Regarding domestic politics, Sandu stressed that there is no ongoing political crisis within Moldova’s republican leadership. While acknowledging the Cabinet’s situation, she reassured that there is no justification for fear or panic over political instability, and she urged a calm and measured approach to governance in the republic.
