Microsoft is set to invest 1.95 billion euros in Spain through 2025 to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence infrastructure. The aim is to spur digital innovation and promote responsible use of AI across public and private sectors in the country.
This commitment was conveyed by Microsoft’s president, Brad Smith, during a meeting with Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, at La Moncloa. Also present were the minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration, José Luis Escrivá, and a government team that confirmed the figures and intent in an official release.
Officials described the investment as the largest by the technology multinational in Spain to date, underscoring its significance for the country’s digital trajectory and its leadership in AI-enabled innovation.
During the discussions, the parties examined a range of collaboration agreements between the government and Microsoft designed to broaden the use of artificial intelligence within the Public Administration. The focus includes generative AI solutions and training programs to upskill civil servants, positioning Spain to harness AI for greater public service efficiency and citizen impact.
The talks also addressed strengthening national cyber security in partnership with the Ministry of Defense and the National Cryptologic Center, with involvement from industry players and small and medium enterprises alongside the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE). The objective is to build resilient digital ecosystems and safeguard critical infrastructure as AI capabilities expand across sectors.
In a strategic push, Microsoft announced the imminent opening of a new cloud region with data centers in the Community of Madrid. Additionally, the company plans to develop a data center campus in Aragon to serve European public and private sector organizations. These projects will operate under sustainability criteria, contributing to Spain’s ambition to become a hub for interconnected digital infrastructure and advanced data services.
Government officials highlighted that these strategic investments in data centers and research and development will accelerate Spain’s digital transformation, reinforcing collaboration with the state on cybersecurity and the development of AI tools for government use. The collaboration is presented as a cornerstone for modernizing public services and expanding the responsible deployment of AI across public administration and industry, while maintaining strict compliance with data protection and ethical guidelines.
Prime Minister Sánchez emphasized Microsoft’s role in advancing Spain’s digital landscape, noting the company’s investment in data centers and R&D as well as its partnership with the government on cybersecurity and AI tool development for public administration. The commitment is framed as a pivotal step toward a more connected, agile, and secure digital economy in Spain and beyond, with the broader aim of enabling better services for citizens and more efficient governance. The government reiterated its support for a tech-enabled future that aligns innovation with responsible AI use and robust cyber defenses in the national interest.
