In 2023, the global maritime market recorded a total of 5,976 registrations, marking a 2.2% year-over-year increase. This growth reflects data compiled from the General Directorate of Maritime Trade and analyzed by the National Association of Shipping Companies (ANEN).

The sector is undergoing a shift, with a rising emphasis on private boat ownership and yacht charter over long-term ownership. The marine charter segment finished 2023 with 2,057 recreational boats registered for rental use, up 4.79% from 2022 and now representing 34.4% of all boat sales.

Balearic Islands take the lead

The Balearic Islands emerged as the top market for charter boats in 2023, recording 608 registrations and holding about a 30% market share. Catalonia followed with a 22% share and 456 registrations, showing a 13% rise from 2022 and establishing itself as the second-largest contributor to the pleasure boat rental sector.

Smaller vessels on the rise

There was notable growth in smaller vessel segments, particularly boats around six meters in length, while ships in the 7.5 to 12 and 16 meter ranges also expanded. In contrast, the larger-boat categories experienced a downturn. Water bikes surged by roughly 50% in 2022, and foldable inflatable boats increased by about 16%.

Andalusia, Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands remained the regions with the strongest maritime activity, each holding substantial market shares of about 20%, 19%, and 18% respectively. In numbers, Andalusia registered 1,214 pleasure boats, Catalonia 1,133, and the Balearic Islands 1,075. The Canary Islands saw a remarkable 50% growth from 2022, with 482 registered vessels.

Global uncertainty

Even with stability, ANEN’s general manager notes a lingering decline trend in the maritime market in 2022 that was expected to persist into the following year. The driver of this slow-down is attributed to international tensions and conflicts that dampen recreational navigation activity.

Leaders in the industry emphasize the need for renewed effort across innovation, supported by tax adequacy and ongoing legislative progress, to sustain and expand the market. An attractive and accessible offering can stimulate sales and sustain momentum.

Copa América presents an opportunity

The sailing world is poised to leverage the Americas Cup as a platform to boost interest in maritime sports. Yet industry observers, including the general secretary of the Catalan Nautical Cluster, Michael Guarner, point to broader market transformation driven by the preferences of new generations.

Guarner explains that the shift is toward an ownership model that emphasizes flexibility and mobility: many users prefer renting and traveling to different destinations rather than keeping a single boat docked near a second home. This evolution reflects evolving consumer behavior and the growing appeal of travel-centered boating experiences.
